funny, they definitely need to have a sense of humor. I don't care what kind. Overt. Subtle. Dry. It just has to make you smile or laugh once in a while.

The ability to make you feel what the characters feel, to make you care.

An enjoyable story that doesn't make you sick to your stomach can't be too mushy and cheesy. It has to be realistic to some extent.

Yeah, I like humor, too. Lol, a joke here and there.

For me, there needs to be a build up. I don't like "romances" where the two people meet one day and are sleeping with each other by the same night. Maybe that's because I'm old school. I'm also not big on stories that are clear imitations of other, more famous ones OR romances that take themselves waaaay too seriously. Infuse them with humor when possible.

Although I guess Cheyenne and BeautyIsFleeting would apparently not be big fans of what I'm writing....I say if the people are in love, that's all that matters.

I guess the reason authors write stories like that is because they are writing for readers who want to get to the action quickly.

You are undoubtedly right, Michael. I know some people like for the ball to start rolling early on. It's just not my personal preference unless it's a one-shot...

I quite like realistic ones.

I don't mind 'unhappy endings', just as long as I can really picture it in my head.
