Topic: Back room M material?
I'm not sure if anyone else has or has had this particular grievance, but today I posted the first chapter of my first story, and discovered I couldn't find it in the sci-fi section. I had just posted it, so it was highly doubtful it had been pushed out of sight. After fretting for a bit, I finally discovered that if I searched stories with the ratings set to M, I could find it.

However, then it dawned on me that when the page initially loads for any user, its automatically showing K -> T, and excluding the M rated stories? Afterword I reviewed my work and felt it qualified for being knocked down a notch in terms of its rating.

I don't know about anyone else, but this doesn't seem very fair to authors who write M rated material. If we're submitting our work here then it would be nice to receive the same exposure. I know that people can search for M rated stories if they want to, but until now I was oblivious to the M stories not initially showing up with the others in the list; so how significantly could my potential hit/review base have been decreased because of that? The genre, length and stat options were set to all, so I naturally assumed that the stories of all ratings were also being shown.

As my story develops I know it will break out of the T rating, so it would be nice if the page automatically loaded on 'Fiction Rating' All.

Oh well, maybe I'm just a lone voice *****ing.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

A lot of the T rated stories on this site should be rated M because of their content. Barely anyone sticks to those rules...they only complain if a story dealing with sexual content or whatever is rated K. Don't worry about it and just keep it rated T if the lack of exposure in the M section bothers you.

Yes, welcome, and Skinner and Freud are psychologists. Actually, Freud is a psychoanalyst so you can have him. ...Actually behaviourists irritate me, so take Skinner to!

It's mad that you're into philosophy because I learnt the other day that the term 'doctor' was originally only used for accomplished philosophers but then adapted to fit the medical profession and scholars of a doctorate level.

Oh yeah, that's REALLY annoying. I mean, I guess I can understand it with most of the Ms being just text porn, but, there are SOME M rated stories that although they have adult material, are not built on just sexual arousal like some stories. I think it's a little bit unfair that they don't get the same exposure. (My story is one such case)

Frued was sexist. I know, it was part of his time period, but women's suffrage existed in America near the end of his life, and women's rights struggle went on before then. No need for all that 'penis envy' stuff. Ego and Superego and Id are all lovely, especially for writing, but I can't like him. He irritates me beyond belief. Don't know much of anything 'bout Skinner.

Someone wise once told me that everyone who wants to have anything to do with books should read the Bible and Shakespeare - those are what you need to survive. I don't like it, but I think they've got to add Freud to that list.

Just post it in teen. They never check this site. I'm surprised we even updated.

Well, I lowered my rating because now that I reexamine it, it really isn't all that graphic except in just some parts, and even then, I think it's fairly tame compared to other Ms. I dont curse and the violence isn't anything you dont see on netowork television. Most of the nudity is innocent and not used in a sexual content. There is one very graphic scene but that is an exception and not the rule. And I will put a warning for that episode when it airs.

Interesting observation. I never knew M-rated stories were somewhat hidden by default. It does seem a little unfair to older writers who like to write more mature content, but at the same time it seems like the majority of the people on FP are younger writers.

Perhaps the FP staff should consider making browsing settings personal, like being able to set what kind of content (i.e. being able to view T-M stories, hiding certain story sub-genres when browsing, etc.) is shown by default. It'd make a world of difference in the long-run.
