Topic: The Good, the Bad, and the Sucky
Yeah, hey there. I'm a newb to this site, though I like to think myself to be pretty familiar with writing for my age. (still in highschool) There's one aspect of it that never fails to confuse me though: poetry. What makes a poem good or bad? What is it that wins it a nobel prize? I mean, anybody can write this stuff; it's never had any real set definition... (considering the line between it and prose can sometimes be blurred) So who's to say that a nobel-prize-winning poem is better than an obscure, randomly picked one?

...well...unless it's been written in 1337 sp33k or it's a cliche, in which case it automatically sucks no matter what.

But putting that aside, what's the difference between good poetry and bad?

good poetry makes you think about yourself, whats around you, how you feel or think, and/or whats important to you. Poetry can be funny, dirty, sad, or apthatic; but good peorty is heartfelt and weel expressed. i believe old poetry isn't good just cause shakespear wrote it - like sonnet 56(bad one) but another one of his sonnet 18 is close to me and makes me thin about me and my family. Good poetry is a relative term for each person. Its all up to you wether its good or not - just think about what its really saying and if it effect you

good poetry has every poetry color in it, the rhythm and the beauty in the way it sounds when read aloud, it has power, variation, many emotions. i guess a great poem moves people, not just one person.

Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.

that doesn't tell you much. sounds great though

Yeah, hey there. I'm a newb to this site...

Hello! And welcome to our humble little community. ^___^

Hmn. That is a good question and it really is a rheatoric; it's very much debatable and under a person's own opinion on the matter, so no one can really say who is right or not.

But, for the sake of being on topic, I'll throw in my two-cents.

What makes a poem "good" is if it can make you feel something, be it anger or sadness, as a lot of poetry is drawn from emotions, from your soul. It also helps that if you are writing a sonnet, that you use Iambic Pintameter. ;)

To win a Nobel you have to be a master in your craft; you also, to some degree, have your own unique style incorporated into it. Usually, by the poet's experience in the field/fame is what would set his/her poems apart from a random one.

But putting that aside, what's the difference between good poetry and bad?

Good poetry doesn't try to be unique. Bad poetry tries too hard.

PS.

I'm sorry if this is rushed and doesn't make any sense; I'm in a bit of a rush.

A good poem is emotional, it makes you feel things. It is deep and heartfelt. It makes you see and imagine things in a new way. It gives you an inside look at what someone else is feeling, thinking, seeing, and imagining. You see what they see, feel what they feel, etc.

A good poem doesn't use cliches verbatim and is interesting. Even if there are "real" emotions in it, there still needs to be interesting language to make a reader want to keep going. Regurgitating the same crap phrases about love is not going to be interesting no matter how real the emotion behind it.
