![]() Do you guys like long or short or medium length...how many words roughly? 6/06/2012 #1 |
![]() It depends on the story but on this site I usually go for no more than 2,500 words a chapter. 7/08/2012 #2 |
![]() Okay, thanks(: 7/08/2012 #3 |
![]() As a writer, I will usually aim for around 3500 to 4500, but I sometimes okay most of the time get carried away, and end up with like, 5000. But in my opinion, longer chapters work for the story I'm working on at the moment, and I think it works for my readers as well. As a reader however, it depends. I guess it all depends on the story, like TheYearIs2012 said, but also on how often you update...? I usually steer towards longer chapters (or stories who have more chapters) when I feel like reading a story for a couple hours at a time -- but then I like shorter chapters for stories that are on my "alert" list -- those that I'll follow over an extended period of time. Those are usually the stories I'll read when I'm busier or I want something to entertain me while I procrastinate on homework. I like those shorter. So there's no right answer or wrong one -- it's all a matter of personal opinion, and there are A LOT of those on FictionPress, which makes it difficult to please everyone. My advice is: go with what YOU feel comfortable with, or what YOU like. 10/19/2012 #4 |
![]() My chapters tend to get pretty long, sometimes over 5,000. I've been known to break a chapter in two if there's a good stopping point around the middle, but ultimately if a chapter need to be long, than it needs to be long. As a reader, I'm not bothered by long chapters, as long as the story is good. I like some good meat on my chapters. 11/13/2012 #5 |
![]() I think you said it perfectly. I too enjoy reading long chapters when I'm really into a story and have hours to kill. But there are times when I just want to do some quick reading to relax and that is when I go for the shorter chapters. For my writing, my first chapter is always the shortest for some reason. Every chapter after usually hovers around 2,500 to 4,000. 1/20 #6 |
![]() Why are the phrases crossed out? They're still perfectly legible. Different authors write different lengths. Readers tend to like different things. For me, in all honesty, I couldn't give any input on length it's the content that counts. 1/25 #7 |
![]() When I'm writing chapters for stories that are for my own use only, I don't really bother how many words there are in a chapter. However, when I'm writing something that I'm going to post online, I try to stick to between 1000-2000 words because I (I don't know about anyone else) get impatient reading one chapter that seems to go on forever and then read another chapter that goes on forever and being unable to mark my place in a story if I have to leave my computer- one of the reasons I like to read on my phone. I still like to edit and add stuff as I go, though, which probably confuses people. 2/23 #8 |
![]() My chapters tend to get pretty lengthy. I tend to have lots of dialogue, and there's a lot going on in each chapter. 2/28 #9 |
![]() I typically write somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 words a chapter, depending on the book. For example, anything I write in first person is usually about two thousand, anything written in third person is three thousand, and if I have rotating narrators (always in third person to avoid confusion) four thousand or more. 4/14 #10 |
![]() I always aim for 2,000 words per chapter. Sometimes I hit 2,000 on the nose, or I go over by maybe 100 words. 4/22 #11 |
