I read LOTR after the second film had came out and before the third. It was kind of weird reading it that way because I'd seen half the films so I had Orlando Bloom as Legolas in my mind and I found out the scenes that hadn't been included. So when I got to Return of the King I had to imagine what Boromir's father (forgot his name) would look like and some of the settings. Then when I watched the third film I knew what was going to happen. I'm glad they took the Saruman and the Shire bit out in the film; never liked that bit in the book.

Anyway, that was a bit of a ramble.

I had to read LOTR in school after the first movie came out. I liked it. I just thought SOME parts were boring. But writers tend to do that. Add parts that no one could give a ** about. But eh. It happens.

I read LotR after the first movie... well actually. i started reading the first book before the movie came out but i couldnt do it. i skipped ten pages here twenty there. eventually i "finished" the first book. i was pis- angry when i watched the second book. they changed alot and that was my favorite (actually read the whole thing) third one was ok. should have added the ending though i think. it added more closure to the whole fiasco. still, loved the movies... discounting the pieces and bits not added in...

It took me forever to finish all three books (I skipped the end to the first book since I saw the movie xD). They're just not to my liking. I like the books I read to have a bit of humor in them be it high fantasy or supernatural, or whatever. And there were no real female characters that I actually liked. ::shrug:: I guess I'm just picky.

Yeah, the only female character I really liked was Erowyn because she went and fought alongside the Roran men and defeated the Nasgul. All the other female characters didn't seem to do anything, but I guess that was an effect of the time. (Ignore any spelling mistakes.)

The thing with Eowyn is that originally, she was going to marry Aragorn. Then, Tolkien decided that she should marry Faramir and made up the character of Arwen. (Yeah, I'm a huge LOTR fan.) Eowyn is also one of my favorites... As for the female characters not doing anything, that's not typical to all of Tolkien's writing. There are many major female characters in The Silmarillion in addition to major male characters.

Really? I didn't know that. I always though Arwen and Aragorn's romance was one of the things Tolkien would have thought up early on. Do you know why he choose Eowyn would marry Faramir?

No, I don't know why, but I'm glad he did. For some reason, I always liked Faramir better than Aragorn. Perhaps I've been tainted by the movies, since i like David Wenham better than Viggo Mortensen. Even if he does look like Robin Hood...

Hmm... I did too. Aragorn was too "noble" or something. The people who acted the characters were a bit different then how they were like in the books. For example... Legolas. In the book he says something along the lines of "AI! AI! A Balrog is come!" and in the movie he's this random cool guy. Not that I mind... I've always liked Legolas the best and felt he should've done more stuff in the books... it was just unexpected.

The thing with Legolas is that I've never really been impressed with Orlando bloom's acting abilities. I remember the first time my sister read the books she was telling me that when the Fellowship was on Caradhras, Legolas said something and she had to flip back to the Council of Elrond to figure out who he was. But, I liked Aragorn better in the books than the movie. And Arwen. I don't like Liv Tyler. At all. But, I think out of all the members of the Fellowship, Pippin is my favorite.

I read Lord of the Rings before any of the movies came out or actaully my dad read them to me and it was so long ago i forgot but then i read it again. Does drag on a tiny bit but I really liked it but if you ask me the hobbit is even better. I love the hobbit!

Rofl. I've only managed to get all the way through it, reading every word, once. LOVE the story... Tolkien's writing is just a bit dry for me, lol.

Gotta say, I love Faramir. He's a little more close to the average Joe in combat ability than Aragorn (not to say he isn't capable, of course) and has a quieter nobility about him than either Boromir or Aragorn. It gives him several good qualities that others just don't seem to see, especially his father. I HATED that they made him drag Frodo and Sam halfway to Gondor in the second movie... but that's really my only beef with it. I love the movie adaptation.

Of the Hobbits, I love Pippin the best. "FOOL OF A TOOK!" ROFL. Like the part where he drops something down the hole, and the noise goes on for thirty seconds straight in the movie, or how he eventually learns how to stop being such a fool, and saves Faramir's life...

Here's my two cents of advice:

Read the Hobbit before you read LOTR. You'll understand it a lot better.

What an expensive chunk of advice. Anyway, I'd say to read the history before the hobbit if you can get your hands on it. Then you will know more about Sauron and the other characters. But maybe that's just me.

I enjoyed the histories before the hobbit, but I think that it would confuse a first time reader, since there are a multitude of stories and not just one.

I started reading Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' but there was just too many characters and I realise the book is about the history of Middle-Earth but the exposition was too much. I don't think I'll try to read it again because although I'd love to know the history, the style of the book just isn't my thing.

Has anyone read 'The Children of Hurin'? Is is more 'The Silmarillion' or 'Lord of the Rings'?

I might have read that one. Usually, the other stuff is more like the Silmarillion than LOTR. It's all history.

O_o THE HOBBIT ROCKED! I fell in love with the cosiness it seemed to have. It felt like an old storyteller was narrating to you in front of roaring fire. I also got to see a stage adaption of it in the Grand Opera House...'twas brilliant.

I can't remember The Hobit that well since it's some years since I read it, but I must have enjoyed it because I read it pretty fast and started on Lord of the Rings just after. It's one of those books I really need to read again to refresh my memory.

I read The Hobbit, all three LOTR, and like half of the Silmarillion. I was actually going to finish it, too, but then I lost the book for like three weeks, and already started reading something else, and it was impossible to go back. But one of these days, I'm actually going to finish it!

I like both the books and the movies. I saw the movies before I read the books. The story is really really good, but the writing can be dry. I just have to be in the right mind-set, I guess. For the most part, I like all of the actors chosen to play the characters, but then again, I did see the movies first, so I really didn't get a chance to picture the characters in my mind. I really like Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortenson. Elijah Wood gets on my nerves a little in the third movie, but I still think he did well. I used to like Liv Tyler, but then I saw Jersey Girl, which was a good movie, don't get me wrong, but seeing her acting so ditzy kind of ruined Arwen for me.

It's easier if you well don't ask me...I read it in a month. My favorite character is Pippin. I do agree with some people though it goes on and on and on.

I did the same thing (read them after the second movie and before the third). I must say that at this moment in time, I know that I have read the books. I do not remember them. If it was not for the movies I wouldn't even remember the jist of the story. I do, however, know that when I read them, I liked them immensely. I am planning on rereading them this summer and we'll see how that goes as it goes.

Boromir's father is Denethor, son of Ecthelion. ;) :p

also: i love how in the books it was almost a surprise in the end when Aragorn and Arwen get married but hollywood HAD to play up the romance.
