Topic: Listening to Music
When you write, do you prefer listening to music? If yes, is it ambient or do the songs have lyrics? Do they affect your writing in any way? If you don't listen to music, do you write in silence or with ordinary noises of life around you (TV, people talking.. etc...)?

I actually have ambient music when I write outside of class. It helped me focus and cuts out all the noise from everyone else. Some of them have Latin lyrics but there are only a few of them. What about you?

I always have some sort of noise around me, whether it's TV, voices, or music. It doesn't really matter which, since I don't really listen to it while I'm writing.

The music I listen to depends on what I'm writing - fantasy and scifi get trance/techno, sometimes with lyrics and sometimes without. More realistic stories get everything. And it has a lot of impact on my writing - if the song is hard, violent, then what I write is angry; if it's mourning, then I write sadness, etc etc.

Which can get quite annoying when I want a fight scene and WMP keeps playing soft trance.

Ouch. I can imagine that.

Hmm.. that reminds me. There are times when some songs have such a huge impact on me that an entire story springs up after I listen to one of them oO Weird.

The minion generally chooses one song and put it on repeat for a consistent tone. Things can turn out weird if she don't, or if she starts a conversation while typing.

I find Johnny Cash's music to be good for comedies, and epic stuff for epic moments. When I get round to another genre, I'll let you know what I use.

Actually, I've got a tragedy going on fanfiction.net. Any ideas for good tragic music?

I like having music on in the background, but I'm another one that just ends up tuning it out. I don't have just one song on repeat although I do find myself listening to the same CD over and over again because most of the time I can't be bothered to get up and change it.

I always listen to music when I write, the influence of such can be seen when I post a chapter. There tends to be more action and drama in my chapters where I am listening to music. My other chapters will be more mellow when I haven't listened to any music.

I listen to everything but country and rap. I love international music, Celtic in traditional Irish & Scottish Gaelic, Italian, Japanese, Finnish, etc. Punk and Heavy metal are my favorite genres, but I also love some pop music (as long as it does not completely suck), reggae, new age, ambience, some nu metal, techno, 70's & 80's rock n' roll, and early 90's hits that I use to listen to in high school (nostalgia). I have a few songs that I always like to listen to when writing: All of this Past-Sara Bettens, All around Me-Flyleaf, Asterisk-Orange Range, Evil Angel-Breaking Benjamin, Rolling Star-YUI, One People One Struggle-Anti-Flag, Time After Time-Quietdrive, Welcome to the Slaughterhouse-Lily Holbrook, Worth Dying for-Rise Against, The Voice-Celtic Women, and Umbrella-Rhianna

I make it a rule to play music when I'm writing for myself. When i write essays at school, I feel trapped because I can't delve into the mood. I can listen to anything except heavy metal/country/rap. So yeah..

I listen to music most of the time when I write. Depending on where I am in a story I'll sometimes pick the music (more intense music for fight scenes, etc. I LOVE Apocalytica for those) or I'll just put WMP on Shuffle and see where that music takes me! (I have a playlist of writing music, with a mix soft, epic, intense, etc.) Most of the music is w/o lyrics, but occasionally I'll put on something I know really well and can just tune out the lyrics to...I really like movie soundtracks or music in a foreign language...(Japanese, Latin or Celtic mostly.) Anyways, music ROCKS and it helps me to get in the mood for writing.

I listen to music when I'm planning the plot line but not so much when I'm writing. The type depends on the story, if the story is more fun then I listen to fun music (pop or light rock) iF the story is a bit more serious then I listen to something a little bit more hard core (rock, alternative rock, maybe rap but it really depends on the song). A lot of the time the lyrics match the story but sometimes I listen to music without lyrics as well.

The fact is anytime I listen to a song I always try to match it up with a story somehow

heh, music is like a muse to me. usually, if i'm stuck on a piece of writing, turning to a favorite song usually helps. usually, certain cds go with certain stories, which makes the inspiration come faster =D even if i tune it out eventually. lol.
