Marie SilverTopic: Alternative Endings? In most fantasy books it seems good always conquers evil and the hero's survives and live happily ever after with his true love. I was wondering if anyone prefers a tragic ending or even one where the hero's scarred or won't end up living happily ever after. So what ending do you prefer? ~Marie Silver~ |

In Darkest NightI have nothing against 'good wins against evil'But lately, I've been so fed up with it all, that I'm definitly WAY more interested in other alternatives; if not good over evil, or evil or good, then a spin on interpretations of the definitions of either side, etc. If I have to pick, though? Ideal is that the ending isn't QUITE tragic, but definitly only good for the whole...I wouldn't mind a little human suffering on the part of the main. | #2 Jan 13th 2007, 12:39am | |

IslandbreezeThat's kind of a hard question because now the general trend is to move towards story endings that aren't so "perfect," where there is scarring in the end, a bittersweet victory, because it's more realistic. While I enjoy this feeling in the plotline of the story, personally, I like reading things like end happily just because in reality, it probably wouldn't. It doesn't have to be giddy of course, but I mean, I'd probably prefer it if the hero doesn't end up missing an eye and leg and wandering in the desert without water:) I'd read either...I basically live with a book attached to hand...but I like seeing a happily ever afer ever so often. |

Iggy and Disraeli feat. jofoI like it when it's a tragic ending, an unexpected one, or one where good triumphs, but the protagonist dies. |
|
RudersovgyI swing either ways when it comes to endings. |

FireskyI like ironic endings. Happy, but sad. Balance. |

Heatless FlameBittersweet endings. The hero kills Cliched Oppressor 78623, but loses the girl in the process. Or visa-versa. |

Evil Minion Number 2Sadly, the minion loves endings that work out in unexpected ways. The hero dosn't get what he wants, but gets something better, or maybe worse. The hero loses the contest, but realizes he didn't even like bowlin to begin with. The hero starts getting his independance, but gets shot by his wife (actually seen that one at least twice, once in "The Short Happy Life of Francis MacComber" once in "American Beauty"). The hero destories the emipre, but accidently starts world war three in the process. Everyone dies, but kill the aliens after their death (won't go much into that one for those who havn't seen War of the Worlds).AKA, the minion loves endings that are neither tragic nor perfectly happy. |

HirushenDepending on how the story is written and on the story plot itself, sometimes I like it when the hero gets a happy ending especially if I think he/she deserves it. Otherwise, I sometimes find myself thinking what would happen if the hero had failed at his task and how the story would have ended. For alternative endings, I look to FF.net :D |

Tawny OwlHappy endings can be more satisfying. Like Hirushen says, especially if the hero deserves it. I also like endings with a twist, ones that make me exclaim out loud. Endings where something unexpected happens, or something happens that makes you think. |

Marie SilverPersonally, I like happy endings when reading but too happy or rather knowing it will have a happy ending can be too generic. Sad ending always have a greater impact on me but might put me off reading again. Bittersweet endings are my favourite to write.~Marie Silver~ |
