How Hard Is It To Find A Good Love Story?
It's difficult to distinguish the good from the bad, so tell me what stories do you guys actually like? I mean, what stories have you actually read, that you think are good?

I mean, how hard can it be? Plenty, I've realized. I kinda have a certain kind of expectation, and a certain type of preference. So anyway.

It might depend on the specific sub-genre.

Erotic stories are basically two (or more) people getting together and having sex. When writing such stories, you should use description to titillate the reader.

Stories about relationships should have a plot. The characters would have other things in their lives besides the relationship; make sure to include these details.

I can't get enough of historical romances. I like the woman to be real; not some flighty little idiot. I like the man to be from the u.k (Scottish)... I guess it's just a fetish or some such lol.

Ummm....stories that interest me...well, personally, I like my romance stories to (a) HAVE PLENTY OF ROMANCE, (b) I love details...ALL GREAT STORIES have details (i.e. Homer's "THE ODYSSEY," J.K. Rowling's "HARRY POTTER" series, any of Nicholas Sparks' books) (c) Plot twists (Nicholas Sparks is a New York Times Bestselling Author because his romance novels are all unexpected, surprising, and they keep me hooked) (d) Not all romance novels need sex, but COME ON!!! If you're going to mention it, WE (THE READERS) WANT DETAILS!!! (which is why Nicholas Sparks ROCKS!!!) (e) Consider this: If someone were to make your book into an Oscar Winning movie, your book should be BETTER!!! (f) A good book makes the reader cry FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS (g) When writing a story, you should never try to force it...you need to be in the right mood...and you should be inspired (OOOO!!! Here's a tip...if u have ideas while in bed, either when trying to fall asleep, or from a dream, write them down IMMEDIATELY!!! You want to keep the ideas fresh in your mind...so keep a journal near your bed) (h) Have others edit/critique your work...every author (including the sexy Nicholas Sparks) can improve their writing (i) My last piece of advice: Have fun when writing, because that's when the best stories are produced. I like to think that I MUST write my stories...that the fate of my characters rest on my shoulders...makes it funner...oh, and I tend to be my WORST critique, so don't be so harsh on yourself.

One last thing: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read some of Nicholas Sparks' novels. THE NOTEBOOK and A WALK TO REMEMBER are soooooooooooooo much better when u read the books, and the movie for A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE did the book NO JUSTICE like...AT ALL!!! All the books of his that I've read are SUPERB!

Oh, fyi, reading and writing are BOTH FUN!!!

Peace out!

i went ahead and bought every nick sparks book a while back; they turned out being the same thing over and over and over again. It got old. Really fast. Although I'll admit I agree those two books are a hundred times better than their movies! I just wish he would branch out it all. (He is cute, eh?)

*GASP* You don't know who Nicholas Sparks is?

HAHAHA, JK

Anyhow, Nicholas Sparks is a SUPERB adult romance novelist. After I saw A WALK TO REMEMBER, I decided to read the book that it was based on. And even though I saw the movie, the book still made me cry (Oh, and fyi, the story is slightly different than the movie...). Other movies, such as A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (As Comic Book Guy would put it: WORST FILM EVER!) and THE NOTEBOOK (eeep! The Notebook! :) FABULOUS FILM - A MUST SEE) are based on his novels - A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE is a great story (it's both touching and oh so steamy...hehe) and THE NOTEBOOK is just fantastic. If you enjoy those works, I also HIGHLY recommend "Nights in Rodanthe" and "A Bend in the Road" (be sure to keep a box of tissues nearby, hint hint). So yeah...Nicholas Sparks: writer, pharmacist, my inspiration. :)

I admit, I'm a sucker for most romances, but I tend to avoid the Romance section of FictionPress -- it just looks so huge, and there seem to be a lot of teenage/high school romances around (which are really not my cup of tea at all). As for what is my cup of tea ... well, like Elf Diaper, I adore historical romance, which is why I cling to the Historical section. I'm always up for a great love triangle -- especially one that's either very unpredictable, or one that's darker in some way. Scandals and family feuds also tend to grab my attention pretty quickly ;) In terms of how I like my characters ... that's difficult, because I like a lot, but I admit to being a huge softie when it comes to shy guy heroes with hearts of gold who slip under the radar. And any characters who are likely to get involved in witty, sarcastic arguments will keep me coming back.

However, in historical romance, I can't stand the feisty aristocratic heroine who is oh-so-progressive and open-minded, backchats to everyone and gets away with it, laments how nobody cares about her brains (because she's totally smarter than all the boys) or skill with a sword (because she can totally beat all the boys) ... Seriously, it gets old. I mean, I'm not keen on swooning damsels in distress who do nothing but wait for Prince Charming, but hardcore modern-day feminists stuck back a couple of hundred years are just as bad, in my humble opinion. (But that's another rant.)

So ... anyone happen to know of any really great historical romances from the Romance section?

(By the way, if anyone else likes historical romance, have a look at S. Renee's work, most of which is posted under Historical. Love her stories.)

Hmm, you can find a ton of Romance stories on FictionPress ... but that's where the problem comes in. You can find many un-High School-esque stories about the unpopular/ average girl or guy who dates a popular girl/guy. So, it's very hard to find unique romance stories. Most of the unique romance stories are overshadowed by those stories that are poorly written yet get the most reviews as they are overrated.

To me, I don't really read Myrika's works. They don't capture my fancy so I just mostly skip over them. I tried to read the first chapter of one of her stories (Against all Odds), but then I stopped and clicked the Romance section again to find something else. Her stories just don't appeal to me.

Actually, I'll give the links to two authors whose stories I find interesting.

http://www.fictionpress.com/u/35147/ is a link to Secretive's Profile ~ I find that Quandaries of a Quirky Romantic is great.

http://www.fictionpress.com/u/413992/ is a link to Hate to Hope's profile ~ All of her writing is unique and original, especially Year of the Rabit. Everytime I see Bugs Bunny on TV, I think of one of her characters Rhode ... and Reval. :D

S.J Maas's Queen Of Glass is extremely long, yet also extremely popular - although I think that around 40 chapters she should have broken it up into two parts. I haven't read it yet, and it would probably take me the equivalent of a year to read such a novel. I don't doubt that it's good, but then again I would have to read it for myself since my taste varies from anothers.

I hate cliches as well, so I try (when writing) to be as original as possible. Titles do interest me in a story, but it's the summary that may or may not catch me.

Ex 1. "It's ma frist storie eva, R & R." Turn me off from a story, because a summary is like a first impression - well, actually it is. It says much about what lays behind the title.

Summaries like this do not pull me in.

Me, I don't really care for the number of reviews because I do know that people have different opinions than mine - so what might be 'Great, awesome, Update soon' could be a 'Wow, this story sucks' for me.

Characters should always be consistent in their personalities and the readers should be able to relate to them. They shouldn't have limpid blue tear drop shaped eyes, honey dew kissed hair, a lithe (anorexic) form, and have all the guys/girls fall in love with that person. Normal is the best way to stick ... and that should be the only way to stick. Because the other is just a awful monstrosity. Think of the main character Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way from My Immortal (On Fanfiction.net) - here's the link:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2828044/1/ ~ Because having a disease as part of your name is uber hot. Oh, and Enoby is totally lyk goffick. Oh, P.S and Dumbledory goes around cursing at those '**ing preps' with his Avril lavigne sweatshirts.

Imperfection makes a person who they are, when they're perfect - then there Superwoman/Superman. But even Superman had some flaws.

Anyways, I've just spent like most of my homework time procrastinating and writing a reply for this forum so I better get cracking. I have a massive History test on Monday and I can't remember anything except that apparently somewhere is called the Breadbasket of America. I'm doomed D:?

Hey, have you read A Whole New Crowd by Tijan? The sequel is outand its awesome. The story is intense, meaningful and just plain mindblowing. I gotta admit when i started reading i switched to another story but one day i went back and read the story and it was **ing great. Its above love, friendship, survival, trust and all that and a little bit more. In case anyone out there hasn't tried it they should seriously check it out. Also other stories by the same author Tijan are just as wonderful. Umm... Life Is Beautiful by arachibutyrophobia is also a fun read. So yeah thats that

I have a queston for anyone who sees this- is a good summary part of a good story? Or do you think that bad summaries can lead to good stories?
11/27/2007 #44
anacharlie
I don't thing a bad summary necessarily means the story is bad. But the summary is the first contact the reader has with the story, so if it's bad, most people won't read it.

Alighted Rose
To me, there's a good chance of a bad story behind a bad summary. However... a good sujmary may still lead to a bad story, seeing as there's only so much space to create a summary.

Lack Thereof
This has a touch of irony here. Celestial Destiny, you were the one to critique my summary, and now you've brought it up here.

*hides in shame.* :-P

So, I was just asking, is my summary for Roses for Robin okay now? Or is it too blah still?

Something that bugs me in stories is flat characters. Yes, flat characters and boring dialogue kill a story. So is over-describing people/place/things. So are grammar and capitalization mistakes.

It's not the best, but it's certainly better.

True to life.

None of the characters should be happy-go-lucky, everyone has problems. Also stories that uses cliches but gives the character a soul, life, and real feelings, so that the cliche is hardly noticable

she's dreaming

The good stories aren't always fetching more reviews and a lot of hits. Sometimes, they get left out and thrown into the cyber rubbish bin. I'm kind of the rubbish man.

There's this story I stumbled by yesterday. It wasn't getting tons of reviews like the famous ones (Myrika, xoxluurve etc) but it sure was a good read. I didn't regret reading. At all. It's summary captivated me and urged me to read on.

Nocturnal

He was suffering from insomnia. And if isn't bad enough, he's seeing things. A strange girl in his kitchen at the middle of the night. If only it was hallucination, life would be much easier.

It is possible. I have no idea how to explain that to you in English (it's my second language), but I am positive it can be done.

As my scriptwriting teacher said, you have the hero, who goes through a series of challenges until he can be the hero you want him to be. The challenge women go through in stories don't have to be based on their looks or shyness, it could be another number of things.

When I want a good love story, I type Hate to Hope on the search engine and read on. Seriously. I'm almost done with all of her stories, including the ones on her other account. I love stories wherein the plot does not only revolve on the romance, but around something else... er... something special and original.

Personally I like cliches, but cliches that gives us readers something new. And also characters are important, even if the character is a cliche, but if they're realistic and relateable, then it's all good.

I also find it interesting that you think stories with tons of reviews are overrated. One of the stories I currently enjoy reading in FP is "When The Actor Can't Act" by jessnutsss. It has the many reviews, but somehow I don't think it's overrated. I really recommend it for those who are suckers for a good romantic read. GAH. looking back at my old response, i sound so ... young. not that that's a bad thing, but seriously.

well, not all stories with a bucketload of stories are overrated. but most to date are, with a few that are original and that actually feel so real it's seriously not funny. i know it's a big accusation, but i find it true. most stories now are the same plot on every page, like a girl who sneaks into a all-boy boarding school and a boy whose enrolled into a all-girls boarding school by accident and LOL! gender laughs ensued.

now, i think cliches are okay, but it's when a story falls back onto it too much that i stop reading. i mean, i can already tell what's going to happen. the not-that-smart nerdy girl turned celebrity overnight and (not-so) bad boy are going to end up with each other after a conflict of the epic proportions and his bitchy high heel wearing cheerleading ex (did i mention she's the captain? O:) is so two-dimensional that no one cares.

i want a story that's not so unrealistic because we all know that if this was real life and the cheerleading ex is as manipulative as the story makes her out to be, she'd have a backup plan and would crush that nerdy girl into oblivion and then grab a vendi whatever from starbucks. i wouldn't know. ive never been to starbucks ): but that's cause i strongly dislike coffee and there's no starbucks near me.

so anyways, i guess what makes a good story (to me) is a story where the story is fantastically real.

like it's so real that the main character would be my best friend or that ** down the street. where the girl or boy doesn't just deal with having a boyfriend/girlfriend/wanting one/never-been-kissed but with grades and going to school and parents (yes, the parents have to be there because i love parents, weird as that sounds, in a story cause hello, i have parents and they're ok for the most part.), and friends who don't fit into a super-flat specific role like the gossipy best friend.

oh, and where the main character doesn't have some weird allergy (this might come back to bite me) or is super-accident prone. i mean, sure we all have our moments but everyone's not bella swan. jeez.

:)

I like that post.

I want something that's realistic. In a sense. Kind of hypocritical coming from someone who has one supernatural/romance story in this category, but yeah. There's certain things that I want "realistic". No story should be all fireworks and happiness. To be honest, I want to see pain and grief in stories. It just brings the whole story down to the real world. It seems kind of morbid, just throwing out negativity and claiming it as "realism", so I enjoy things that are also light and fun. Life isn't just a vortex of suffering, so I appreciate some funny moments (as long as it's not overboard with the cuteness).

I like stories that have characters who are very... deep in character. I don't want to see one brand of person in the story, I want to see different things. I don't want to see really overdone cliches with no twists, such as: Nerd girl meets jock guy. The end. There's nothing between the beginning and the end except for obvious, predictable cliches. I love seeing unexpected twists, even if they don't favor reader's opinions.

I like good chemistry between the characters. I don't want just random people thrown in there. One amazing person + One amazing person =\= An amazing couple. The separate characters may have their own flare, but I'd love to see the couple's problems and ordeals. I want the couple to be a separate character (not literally, of course).

Oh, and no happy endings. At least, PERFECT happy endings. The dog get's his bone, the local meat shop is saved, mom and dad won the lottery, you get the tuition for college, my soul mate is in the bed with me. No. that doesn't work. That doesn't happen. At least make something... missing. From this complete happiness.

can't think of anything else at the moment.

That made my day, along with the bella swan comment.

LOL. To expand on my post, I'd like to clarify the fact that I don't hate all that cutesy kinda stuff (otherwise I wouldn't be sauntering around in the Romance section), but too much of it is just... fluffy. I like seeing GOOD cliches. Cliche's aren't just one brand. There's many types of cliche. Like why is it all ways that the GIRL is the nerd and the GUY is the jock? Why can't it ever be the other way around. I'd like to see twisted cliche's for once. They probably won't be as cliche as normal cliches, but it's still in the cliche area due to the typical characteristic of the cliche characters. Cliche is a really annoying word.

Also, if there's a really bitchy girl in the story, MAKE HER DO EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO STOP HER COMPETITORS! Let's be realistic people. If some distorted nerd is stealing YOUR "superhotlykOMG!" boyfriend, what would you do? Sit down and whine "I broke a nail! Time out!" or would you try to perform the excorcism of Emily Rose on her? Yeah, that's what I thought.

I also hate when high school is so typicalized. I hate seeing lines like "There's the popular kids - Jocks, Cheerleaders, Hot people, but really shallow, and then there's unpopular kids - Nerds, Geeks, people who are really smart."

That ** me off, I'm sorry. What kind of school do you go to? No wait, WHEN kind of school do you go to? 1867!? People can be popular without being addicted to sports, or dressing like a tramp, dumb as a yo-yo, or picture-perfect. People can be unpopular when there beautiful, or when they're in to sports, or if they try out for the cheerleading team. Maybe the reason they're so unpopular is because they're STUPID as opposed to being a SUPER GENIUS.

For friggin sakes, people, step out of the '80s and thrust your eyes into the actuality of school.

well, i dont know if there's a triple-post-posting rule so yeah but if there is, then it'd only be your first offense? :)

(warning: long post ahead. may cause sleepiness, eye-rolling and the occasional oh snap!)

cliche actually is a really annoying word. i used to say it as cle-itch 'cause that was the way i read it because apparently people have tendencies to create words that aren't pronounced the way they look. i remember i said to my sister, "your such a cliche," cause i was badass like that and my mom turned around and went, "what did you just say?" worst two minutes waiting at a intersection of my life.

did i ever get a talking to about bad words. :x

i agree with you, especially on realistic stories. life isn't one emotion and it isn't as some black-and-white as stories make it out to be. yes, the girl may be a nerd, but why can't she be a fashionable nerd? or just fashionable? why does she have to have mangy, grungy dungy (...) hair and wear old rolling stones tees?

(btw, i love how in stories, the nerd has this hot bod underneath her clothes. wouldn't people notice if you had boobs the size of pamela anderson's? me thinks they would)

ive seen the whole reverse-roles thing. but most times, it's as stereotypical (sadly) as the original. the popular girl notices something in the nerdy guy she hadn't despite him sitting right there (i really mean right-there-next-to-her right there) and it's revealed that she's a secret star wars fan because star wars is the epitome of nerdiness apparently.

but opposition from her shallow friends keeps her from her one. true. love until ** eye for the straight guy turns him totally fab! the end. uh, major loophole: where do they get all this money to buy a new wardrobe? my parents would say that what i have is fine and they gave me money a few weeks ago to buy stuff. end of case, you lose. now go clean your room.

personally, i'd sit down and whine. maybe even cry a little, cause it takes a shizzload (im trying not to go overboard on the cursing XD) to grow my nails. but that's probably because i bite them when i'm nervous. or bored. :/

haha, i don't know how people can pinpoint an exact group. in my school, sure, a few people are usually together, but we all move around. there would be me, the awesometastic (:P) class clown/self-proclaimed indie kid and then my friend whose the versatile fashionable in-person who hangs with everyone. i guess they do that because to write down actually what everyone is would take a whole book, so it's much easier to stick with already made groups.

as i was saying earlier, life isn't black-and-white. there are the good times and the bad times and just-there times. a person can be happy all the time, but there will be times when that person just needs to sit and cry or get mad and throw something.

i hate when a author does something to please a reader because that means that you're not writing for yourself, you're doing for someone else. and i hate that, no strongly dislike, just hate.

i value your opinion and everything, but if i want my character to stay with that lowlife sonnava, then i'm going to make her stay with him because i wrote her character that way and she's not just going to suddenly realize out-of-the-blue that she can do better.

eh, a character i wrote hooked up with a guy that she liked. they don't really have any chemistry or anything, so all they do is makeout.

i didn't want to do the whole movies and gushy romance stuff because im lazy, so i made him a cute looking guy with nothing going on (he likes to beat up guys as a pasttime /:) and her, a kinda boycrazy girl whose smart but then again, she's a teenager so she's not really thinking with her head when it comes to guys.

they fight alot. i think i secretly put a little too much of my last boyfriend and me in there. XD

i like happy endings as long as it isn't all neatly wrapped up in a bow. i mean, c'mon it's very unlikely that you get that scholarship to that college you can't afford the same week you meet the love of your life and your parents decide to get back together. seriously?

i like twist endings too, but i strongly dislike when it comes out of nowhere. like the author just pulled it out of their ** because they got tired of the story or thought it was genius. i especially hate the, they rode off into the sunset only to be hit by a car that's not even invented in that time and die. what the-

i love unresolved endings, y'know, the ones that leave the story open for interpretation like ghost world or the bell jar. :)

and to answer your question, a duh conduit, they go to the school of badly written cliche two-dimensional cutout carboard box characters. its common knowledge :P

and btw, what's with the whole losers/nerds/artistic/indies wearing converses as a way to show their originality and non-conformist ways? and why do the popular queen bees wear pumps (wouldn't it hurt wearing pumps all the time? i heard that it causes serious problems on the news)? converses are popular, so wouldn't the queen bee wear some?

i hardly ever see the "in girls" wearing christian li-something or coco chanel. my friend whose super-popular wears heels, but she wears her converses until they're beat up and scraggly.

For friggin sakes, people, step out of the '80s and thrust your eyes into the actuality of school.

that made me laugh. it reminded me of that movie kickin' it old skool. :)

ooh, story reccomendations. i shall take a look. O:
