Topic: Elves, Dragons and Other Little Critters...The UnCliche Type

Other than the tall magic elves living in tree house's, or the big red dragon with flame and anger management. What creatures of such do people here use in their stories? The old, short, red headed, drunken mining dwarf's getting a bit clichey, sure we can come up with something new?

Playing with the idea of elves living along side a vlocano or waste land, something different?

What kind of creatures/species can you come up with?

In one of my older stories that will probably never again see the light of day...I had elves who lived in a variety of places. Some did live in trees, but they actually lived inside the trees. One group lived on the ground, though. Their body shapes changed by village/tribe--the ones on the ground were heavier. One of the villages was for the elderly--elves who were so very old that they were beginning to look their age.

For ideas on odd dragons, look in one of those how to draw books by an anime artist. You'll find dragons who look like mixes of cats or dogs or birds with lizards. This could give you so ideas of how to describe dragons in a more nontraditionalist way. Some of my favorite books with dragons include The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede--very funny dragons who only look traditional--and the Pit Dragon Trilogy--somewhat traditional.

The only dwarf I've ever written for worked at a greasey spoon diner, wore a bowler hat, and had a thing for tree nymphs--granted he was only half-dwarf as his untraditionalist father had married a human little person.

I'm sure this is just as clichéd as those you mentioned but I find no problem with using ordinary fantasy races as long as the characters and plot are solid and are integrated in fresh new ways (my world only has elves, humans, dwarves, cat-people, orcs and goblins. Among other monsters such as kobolds and lizardfolk). Anyways, a race I have come up with are basically angels. They were created by the goddess to protect the races of the planet. Now.. it goes into a bit more detail then just that, but I won't get into too much here.
