I am human, yet not. A woman so delicate as if she would break if you touched her with bare, callused hands. A woman with a voice so gentle, like a songbird singing its morning song. A woman as beautiful as water falling from a mountain’s edge and as awing as the willow tree sways. I am a siren, and I came to this earth from the womb of my mother, a mermaid, and my father, a man.

Because of my father, I was born as a child with legs, not fins. Some people would think of it as a privilege to have legs, but I think of it as a curse. I long every second to have fins, but it never happens. I still have legs.

I think of my life as a never-ending nightmare because I really do believe it is. My father, whom I lived with out of sea, died when I was only an infant, and my mother is somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. I know she’s watching, waiting for me, to grow into a beautiful and enchanting young lady.

As I also wait in the orphanage in my country, Greece, I hope and pray everyday for a savior to rescue me. I need to be discovered soon, or I’ll wither and die of loneliness, but then I’d remember…

Patience is a virtue.
