J.K. Rowling says it best how to write a story.
Q:
When you start, do you do a complete plan before you start writing, or
do you just have an idea from the start and then just keep writing.
JK Rowling:
I do a plan. I plan, I really plan quite meticulously. I know it is
sometimes quite boring because when people say to me, "I write stories
at school and what advice would you give me to make my stories better?"
And I always say and people's face often fall when I say "You
have to plan," and they say "Oh, I prefer just writing and seeing where
it takes me". Sometimes writing and seeing where it takes you will lead
you to some really good ideas but I would say nearly always it won't be
as good as if you sat down first and thought: Where do I want to go,
what end am I working towards, what would be good, a good start? Sorry,
very dull.
----------------------------------------------------What I think-------------------------------------------------------
She's quite right. I plan all my stories, be they fanfiction or original! I can't just whip open Office Word and write,
because otherwise my characters and those that are canon will end up
meandering off! Avril meanders sometimes. Haha ha. Planning doesn't
just entail writing out an outline if you want, but for me it includes
loads of research! I've been known to research for my original stories
and fanfiction for days! I mean I've Potter sites book marked up the
wazoo! My screen res is 1280x1024 and my BM list scrolls for three
pages!!! You don't even want to know about my original story research
BM's!
If you ever find you don't know where to go with a
fanfiction or original...write out what you want to happen, what end
are you going towards. You might find it to come easier to you if you
plan. I have a habit of knowing the end of my story before I know the
middle which results in the end of the story getting changed, but not
by much because I've usually got the story outlined by the chapters.
My
outlined chapters when it comes to fanfiction usually only carry three
major topic's I want to get across and two or three smaller less than
major ones. My original story chapters can contain up to five or six
major topic's and points I want to get across.
