In A Night in the Village, the characters are fictional, but the geography is not. Rendlesham is a real place in Suffolk, East Anglia, located about four miles up the river Deben from Sutton Hoo; it is named for a quasi legendary-historical figure named Rendel, who would have lived in either the fifth or sixth century A.D. While there is no evidence for a farming village in the place where the events take place, contemporary historical sources such as the Venerable Bede state that a royal estate existed nearby. The remains of the king's hall have thus far not been located, but a graveyard does exist just north of modern-day Hoo Hill; in the story, this is a part of the royal lands, where the king's bondsmen live and toil.

The village in the story is roughly in the same location as the modern-day parish of Rendlesham, although the forest which is such a source of fear and awe for the villagers is not the same one that exists today; the great forests of England were thinned during the Middle Ages to accommodate the wool industry and the modern parkland around Rendlesham was planted in the 18th century.

Widfara's sacred grove is in roughly the same location as the medieval church of St. Gregory that overlooks the modern day parish.
