Author has written 3 stories for Fantasy, Humor, and General. I am the girl who takes the last piece of bread - and I never feel guilty! I think you all should read Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine, and The Big Orange Splot, by Daniel Pinkwater. Rugby is my life. Of the stories I have on this site, the only one that's going anywhere is the Barrier. Most of it's not posted yet. I think it has some problems, number one being that it reads ugly. Tell me what you think. My thoughts on writing: Happy endings: Happy endings aren't always good. If they are out of place, they can ruin a story. This philosophy on endings sort of goes along with "if you have a big war, don't expect me to believe all your characters will survive." I know fantasy often defeats crazy odds - it has since the times of Culhwch and Fionn Mac Cumhaill, but even they had friends kicking the bucket right and left, which is how it ought to be, really. I hate it when all the characters miraculously pull through. I want sacrifice, dammit. If somebody get peirced through the heart, they should die. I mean, otherwise they're the undead, right? I've noticed English authors have a greater tendency to let their characters have it. They're not quite as confused about how physics, reality, and grievious wounds work. Thank you, guys. Americans have a disturbing way of pussyfooting around and either make everyone live, or kill off some minor character. Really, overly happy endings are like coffee grounds - warm, but useless and quickly stale. Endings that aren't quite Christmas have a lot more punch, and leave a reader thinking. They are also more original, I find. Great Works of Literature Sometimes, you will read something that is the most beautiful melody you've ever heard, but put to paper. Sometimes one that contains some fundamental truth. Sometimes a novel that holds a world more amazing and ideas more intricate than anything you've ever come across before. And sometimes you'll read a book that was written just to entertain you - to be read and enjoyed, nothing more. And there is nothing wrong with that. | |||||||
