Favorite Stories
My absolute favorite story on this site is The Three Powers by medieval-rogue, who I was lucky enough to snag as my beta-reader. The plot is creative, the writing is brilliant, and you will fall in love with the characters. (expanded summary below)
A ruthless vampire has found a way to let his family walk in the sunlight. He's using this power to amass an army, one that can only be countered by three sisters with closer ties to the vampiric race than expected. One is kidnapped and held prisoner, and the other two have to deal with diverse races and their powers and changing blood. To defeat the army, they may have to tap into magic they don't believe in...

Art by Yasmina Reza. Yes, I'm being very nerdy putting this play here, since I had to read this for English class. But it's only 50 pages (I have the script-only version) and I really liked it. Serge buys a painting, four feet by five: a white canvas with fine white lines. Oh, and it cost 200,000 francs. His friend Marc is very upset by this, and the two draw their harried friend Yvan into their mess. The argument gets more and more personal until Serge hands Marc a felt-tip pin and says, "Go on."
The Vampire Files by P.N. Elrod. That link is to the first volume, but I read the whole series. It's set in the mid-to-late 1930's in Chicago, and features Jack Fleming, a vampire more along the lines of old-school vamps. His friend Charles Escott is clever, a private agent (like a detective, but without divorces), and British. The mysteries are hardboiled and feel authentic to the time period, and the first one starts out with Jack discovering his new vampirism and tracking down his murderer. A lot of these are out of print so your library may not have them. The author has most for sale on her website.
Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs. In the same universe as the Mercy Thompson books, but featuring the characters in Aspen Creek. Cry Wolf features Anna, a rare Omega wolf, discovered by Charles Cornick, son of the head North American werewolf. Just as Charles is acclimating Anna to a non-abusive pack, a threat shows up in Aspen Creek that could tear every Pack on the continent apart.
