Welcome to Cylinsier's Library
I am a technical writer and web designer; I write fiction on the side as a hobby. I also do a lot of videography as part of my job and as a hobby when I get around to it. I'm also a major computer geek: current machine is home built. My education level is post-graduate (MA - Technical Communication).
I write in many genres and styles but tend to lean towards sci-fi, horror and action. Although all of my short stories are listed as "complete," I consider all of my writing to be works-in-progress and every story here is subject to change and updating at anytime...or maybe never. Please read and review and I will do the same. I am aware that I tend to make a lot of typos but I do appreciate them being pointed out all the same.
About my style
I am typically very minimalist in my writing style. This means I write specifically about the situation on which my story is focused and leave the details up to the imagination of the reader. This is especially true with my older stories. I may describe some character traits here and there, but for the most part I leave things like character height and appearance, setting, and time purposefully vague. This way, each reader can interact with the story by filling in the blanks themselves. I think I get it from being a big Raymond Carver fan.
Other major literary influences include Michael Crichton, Mark Z. Danielewski, Jim Thompson, David Foster Wallace, Jack Kerouac, Albert Camus, Cordwainer Smith, and Jack London. I have a great interest in modern philosophy and psychoanalysis as well and I'm sure that tends to present itself in some of my stories. I'm a major movie buff too and would count such films as Fight Club, Citizen Kane, Chinatown, Double Indemnity, Se7en, Memento, The Usual Suspects, Ghost in the Shell 2, Donnie Darko, and Southland Tales as major influences on my stories. I'm also an anime fan; some of my favorites are Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, and Lain.
Besides direct literary influence, some other aspects of my life may have an affect on my writing. I'm an avid video gamer (Xenogears is my favorite game) and a major proponent of independent bands, mostly in the punk, post-hardcore and indie rock genres. Some of my favorite groups are Jets to Brazil, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Denali, and Engine Down. I'm politically liberal. I do not belong to or subscribe to any existing religion, but if I did it would most likely be Buddhism. I enjoy watching Football (Redskins - shut up) and Hockey (Hurricanes - they won a cup a couple years ago so shut up again). I am a world traveler and have been to Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy and Turkey. I lived in Italy for several years. Japan is at the top of my list of places to visit.
