Want my advice? Whenever you get the chance, turn something into a metaphor, it's really good for getting inspiration. eg. Chemistry - we called copper oxide the 'black desert'.
Anyway, whatever you do, don't let anyone discourage you. Writing is a gift, everyone has it, it's just that not everyone discovers it... or maybe even discovers it late, like I did.
