my little compulsive liar knows,
all the lives i could have lived

she maps out her pasts with shaking fingers;
swears everything will be different this time,
because things are going to change
(and she's always hated being the same).

i try to pull her hair and hold her back,
but she goes on without me because
she's someone else now.

her backpack holds her many lives,
colored contacts, language books.
she really wants to be who
she's lying to become.

and she talks with energy, trains
her fingers to point at maps and say:
"this is where i live."

she tells me, "these are all the people you could become,
whatever, and anyone."

and i don't know what she's running from,
but i know i'm coming with her.

She breaks
glasses, bottles, cups
but never windows

she keeps those open,
and the breeze touches silky silver curtains,
makes her shiver, ‘cause it’s cold

She breaks
her glasses, the kind she needs to see
because she likes her world a little soft around the edges

She drops a

martini-glass (emptied now)
and wonders if this is what she has come to.

She looks
at the broken glass, and sees her self

reflected back.
