hi readers,

Who knows but again the old flags, ragged and torn, snapping in the wind, may face each other and flutter, pursuing and pursued , while the cries of victory fill a summer day? And after the battle, then the slan and wounded will arise, and all will meet together under the two flags, all sound and well, and there will be talking and laughter and cheers, and all will say: Did it not seem real? Was it not as in the old days_ Berry Benson, Confedrate Veteran

Note about the quote:

I am a Civil War reenactor and proud of it. Its like no other hobby out there, my friends think I’m insane for doing it; because my dad an I get up at six in the morning put on gray wool coats and paints and push around thousand pound canons all day, with big smiles on our faces. And some people think I’m strange because I reenact Confederates, even though I live in a northern state. I often have to answer questions like “Where are your slaves?” and frankly I’m tired of it! I play the common solider who was dirt poor, and couldn’t even own a slave if they wanted to. Mostly the common man didn’t give damn if the south had slaves or not, they were fighting because they thought that their homes should be run by themselves rather than by some know all government in Washington. That being said, I reenact for five major reasons: To clear up the misconceptions about the war. To see what it was like be a solider in 1861-65 and educate others about my experiences. Because its a lot more fun than you think, it’s a great way to make new friends. Because I have CP and won’t be able to join the real military. To see the excitement in a child’s eyes when we walk by covered in mud an grass stains, or when our canon booms.

If you ever want to talk Civil War or learn about reenacting PM me and I’ll get back to you when I can.

Words one of my fav song: A Man's A Man for All That by Robert Burns

Is there for honest Poverty
That hings his head, an' a' that;
The coward slave-we pass him by,
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that.
Our toils obscure an' a' that,
The rank is but the guinea's stamp,
The Man's the gowd for a' that.

What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hoddin grey, an' a that;
Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine;
A Man's a Man for a' that:
For a' that, and a' that,
Their tinsel show, an' a' that;
The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor,
Is king o' men for a' that.

Ye see yon birkie, ca'd a lord,
Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that;
Tho' hundreds worship at his word,
He's but a coof for a' that:
For a' that, an' a' that,
His ribband, star, an' a' that:
The man o' independent mind
He looks an' laughs at a' that.

A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an' a' that;
But an honest man's abon his might,
Gude faith, he maunna fa' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their dignities an' a' that;
The pith o' sense, an' pride o' worth,
Are higher rank than a' that.

Then let us pray that come it may,
(As come it will for a' that,)
That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth,
Shall bear the gree, an' a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's coming yet for a' that,
That Man to Man, the world o'er,
Shall brothers be for a' that.

The opposite of fear isn’t courage, its love

-Marine

Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.

"In great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear, but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field to ponder and dream; And lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls."

"I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast."
