Hello, this is Kelly Changpui, but maybe you already knew that. My life has been marked by people, throughout the years, as well as the new towns and schools that I've passed through along the way. These people and places are so important that they're the basis for my first book, called, "Virgin Eyes." It's a memoir about the firsts of things that happen to a young adult. I felt the book had to be written because teens of all shapes and sizes have gone through the things that I have, and they could use someone looking out for them. I know because my character is me in the book. Every character in my story is real, even if some of their names have been fabricated. The quotes from them are what I remember. It's hard for me to fill the blank spaces between the moments that truly, truly stand out.
Here's some background, and really the beginning of the story: In December of 2004, I was a shy eighth grader, getting straight A's, (except in math), and believe it or not, my biggest concern was if my gorgeous science teacher noticed me. (He was only 23, it wasn't sick or anything.) One the eve of my moving to a new school, one of my friends revealed that he'd lost his virginity. Shocked, I just about turned my back on him, and didn't even let him explain. I haven't, to this day, talked to him since.
My new school wasn't the easiest one to fit into. But I gained friends quickly, and joined a friendly bunch out of necessity. In the beginning they shocked me. Suddenly I was around things I couldn't even imagine...thigns that were to them the norm. As a friend I stayed around for the ride. But their over abundance of outrageous antics, and information about their personal lives turned me from who I was into someone new. Suddenly I understood the term of "Virgin Eyes." Today nearly all of those individuals remain my best friends.
And although this story sounds intimidating, it isn't. There are moments of every emotion. (After all, teenage hormones ;) ) But seriously? This story covers my experiences in growing...(through people mostly, after all, I'm still only 5' 1".) Through the time the book spans over I found what was really important in life. Through this book my character (me) finds out what happiness is, how far you can go for love, everything.
Anyways, this is a story of someone who had to be changed completely in order to find herself again. I hope you enjoy my work, "Virgin Eyes." ;P
