A lot of things happened that night, and he believes that if he dresses like he did before the ball then things will go back to how they were then- so he dresses like he’s at the ball still. It's part of his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that he believes he can't touch things from bad times in his life, or the bad things will come back.
