This is the 'I fell in love with my best friends brother' cliche but with a twist.

Holly moved from London to Somerset when her mum got another job. She befriends a girl and becomes acquainted with the girls brother who is a mute. He is extremely depressed and causes self harm etc. Later on in the story you find out how he became a mute. Most people don't even talk to him and those who do either skit at him or talk to him like he's retarded, but not Holly. She is fascinated by him and will give him no pity.
