Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say.
I think that there are three types of writers:
1. Those who base their characters on elements inside them. These writers tend to write in order to explore who they are - their writing is therefore personal, and hard for others to comprehend.
2. Those who draw inspiration from society and people around them. These usually criticize (and rarely praise) the wrongdoings of others, without looking at themselves first.
3. Those whose stories are based purely on imagination. These writers write to entertain - both themselves and others, but critics will frown at their stories on the basis that they are too "plot-focused" and don't have any themes "deep" enough for analysis.
I am sad to say that I belong to none of the three, because I simply don't write enough. When I do, I am certain it is not me who's writing, but another entity altogether.
