Author has written 4 stories for Romance, Nature, Kids, and Fantasy. Hey people! Who am I? I'm no one special. Just a fourteen year old who's aspiring to become a fiction writer of some sort. In case you're wondering my profile image says 'Look, nobody really knows where all this shit came from. But I think I'd rather trust the dudes in labcoats who aren't demanding I get up early every Sunday to overdress and apologize for being human.' LOL! Things I can't stand when it comes to stories Note: This list relates more to novels that I've read, as oppose to the stories on this website. But I still think this gives writers a general idea about what to avoid. 1. Supernatural/fantasy stories that portray scepticism as a vice: I am yet to come across one novel/movie in the supernatural genre that doesn't try to convince its readers/viewers that sceptics are boring, arrogant and close-minded, or that just believing in supernatural nonsense because of something your friend told you is a positive virtue. This is very cliche feature in supernatural horror stories that annoys the hell out of me! I'm a sceptic myself. I'll have you know that we're not nearly as close-minded as some movies portray us to be. It's just that we want evidence and when it comes to extraordinary claims, testemonies and vague ancient prophecies simply don't cut it. 2. Mary-Sues: Okay, I'm being kind of hypocritical here, but I don't really have a problem with people projecting themselves into the story. After all, I don't know the author, he/she might be an interesting person! What I do have a problem with are perfect characters that make it seem as though the author is trying to force you to feel a sense of admiration for them. 3. Lame false scares: I used to read 'Goosebumps' when I was eight, but I grew out of it pretty quickly because of all those false scares that would come at the end of every second chapter. I mean how many times can you end the chapter with 'Out of nowhere a cold hand clasped my shoulder' before the reader is able to predict that it was just the main character's best friend trying to scare the crap out of him. 4. Stories that shove over-used morals down readers' throats: The most annoying over-used moral in my opinion would have to be'believe in yourself and you'll succeed'. Why is this annoying? 1) I don't think belief is a choice. I can't 'just believe' for example that there are aliens on mars, I need to be convinced of that fact, which leads me to point two. 2) Where's the scientific data that actually proves this statement true? I'm not saying there isn't any it's just never presented in the convincing way. The public just gets beaten over the head with it without a good reason. Also on the list of annoying morals is any pro-environmental message, anything having to do with 'families', 'love will conquere all', anything relating to 'destiny', anti-violence messages, messages about 'self- sacrifice', 'be yourself', and boy I could go on forever. It's not that I disagree with all of these messages I just think they're over-done. I'll add more problems as I think of them, but for now, these are the major issues. My Plot Bunnies Unnamed Fantasy I was thinking of writting an 'atheist's Narnia' or a 'freethinker/sceptic/Humanist's Narnia' to be more precise. I could include themes about science (or the scientific method of testing claims) meeting fantasy (with science winning) or what happens when a person deconverts from a deeply held set of beliefs. The problem is I need a story. Any ideas? Gainers Paradise Believe it or not there are people out there (mainly gay men) who think being fat is sexy. A story about one of them could lead to some interesting senarios and explore health and obesity issues from a unique perspective. Conquering the Selfish Gene For people who aren't into genetics or evolution, our genes main objective or 'goal' is to keep copies of themselves in existence. Of course I'm speaking metaphorically here, genes aren't really sentient, but what if they were and what if they could talk to us? Does that sound wacky enough? You bet! | |||||||||
