Author has written 24 stories for Historical, War, Nature, General, Life, Work, Family, Politics, Religion, and Song. Hello and welcome to my page! I am Franklin D. Van Valkenburg, a native of Marietta, Georgia and currently a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute (Class of 2013). I am a history major and a distance runner. My historical interests are in military history between 1750 and 1950 with a particular focus on the Age of Sail and the Pacific Theater of World War II. I run on the cross country and track teams for VMI in the fall and spring and train for those sports during the summer and winter. Though I am rather far from the sea I do enjoy sailing and would love to own a twenty-footer of some sort in the future. After graduation from VMI, I will commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy and enter the fleet as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), after a few years of which I will attend seminary to get my theological degree and transfer to the Navy Chaplain Corps. God is my Master and Commander, and I shall follow Him wherever He leads me. I guess you could say I serve King and Country! For those of you who are interested in knowing more, I am an avid writer and artist (though VMI tends to keep me from my more artistic expressions; you can't have all your supplies in a barracks room and it's easy to write when you have a laptop, so I've more or less transitioned from artist to writer since entering college). When it comes to music, I prefer trailer scores and soundtracks; Two Steps from Hell and Hans Zimmer are my favorites in each of the similar genres. War movies, westerns, and historical dramas make up most of my DVD collection, though you might find a couple of oddities like Indiana Jones, James Bond, Star Wars, and the other classics that everyone watches. My favorite actor is John Wayne hands down and my favorite movie is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, however, my favorite books are the Richard Bolitho series by Alexander Kent. Sorry Patrick O'Brian! Where do I want to live? What kind of foods do I like? Well, I'll tell you right now I won't ever live in the South once I get my own place. The American Southwest is beautiful country, but so is Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and New England's coastline. I don't know where life will take me, but I know where I don't want it to go... and that's the Deep South or California! I'm rather simple in taste when it comes to food; I enjoy the meatier Italian foods like lasagna and manicotti, but also have a fancy for Tex-Mex and good old American foods! I think that just about sums me up! I wear who I am on my sleeve, so there aren't too many mysteries. If you have any more questions, please do fire away! I'd be pleased to answer! EzekielThis is from a vision I had while in prayer at a VMI Chapel function three years ago. It means a lot to me because I had the vision and after we finished praying, another person felt led to read from Ezekiel 37...a passage that I didn't know of at the time. While this poem is clearly another interpretation of that passage, look deeper. House of the UndyingI listened to "House of the Undying" from the Game of Thrones Score and wrote down what I imagined. I know the imagery is heavily influenced by seeing the show, but I had fun building a Neuschwanstein-style scene set in a fantasy winter world! It's kind of fanfiction, but since the only elements of the show that appear here are that of winter and castles, I posted this poem here.Poetry: Politics - Rated: K - English - Fantasy/Drama - Chapters: 1 - Words: 155 - Published: 10-25-12 - Complete14.
