I feel like I can better explain about myself through poetry.

Hail to those who stepped forth to fight for us.

No one would doubt their courage or strength.

I say I that I also want to fight for us

But my family scoffs and keep me from the ranks.

I am a girl. You heard me. A girl.

I can run just as fast or as long as my brother.

I can fight and yet, still I’m passed over

As though I were any other.

I look down at these fingers.

These violinist’s fingers.

These fingers that have moved

‘Cross both piano keys and brick.

These hands that always caught me

Though I rarely slip or fall.

These always dirty fingernails

Helped me jump over many walls.

I look down at these arms.

These strong, ink patterned arms.

These arms that I tattooed

To hid their many scars.

And in the growing twilight

Lay still to watch the stars.
