About Dead Space

Summary:

Raiden Kuwahara is a student from Japan. Rone Zed is a life-long Traveller. They are strangers. One day they meet, the next, they have to spend the next five years together crossing the void: dead space. The endless dark and solitude threatens their will to continue, but when they reach the other side and get swept up in the brutal world that awaits them, including slavers, raiders and gladiator fights-- they will long for those quiet days of darkness.

My intention with this story is to build a unique relationship between the two main characters who are strangers living on the same ship before all the action takes place. Because resources are limited and their journey is so long, only one can remain awake at a time, the other must remain in cryo-sleep. This way, they share the five year journey through dead space where there is no life to be found. But this also means they must each spend the next 2.5 of their years completely alone. Over time, they build a friendship through their system logs, leaving each other messages and carrying conversations over the course of the five years. Their friendship is built only on these logs, and is immediately tested when they arrive on the other side of the void. Once they reach Bu-Hata, everything changes. Raiden learns of the harsh world of slavery and "freedom fights," based on the old Roman Gladiator fights (or perhaps inspired by Battle Royale or Hunger Games...) in which slaves are pitted against one another to fight to the death to earn their liberty. Raiden also comes to realize all of this is familiar territory for Rone...

On the backdrop of these freedom fights, other mysteries come to life. Raiden meets an old classmate, Sora. The beautiful and clever class president from his time in Japan is now a savvy young woman who's strength and cunning has let her survive the harsh world of Slavers and Traders ever since she was separated from Raiden and their friends. But that reunion comes with more secrets, and the beginning of a quest for "The Key to the Universe."
Raiden, Rone and Sora face not only the Freedom Fighter's Ring, but must protect what they never knew they had all along, and their journey takes them from some of the toughest Stations in the galaxy to the unknown reaches of space.
