The girl who kills herself, the friend who knows of her depression, the parents who are oblivious to their child's suffering and the doctor who has to pronounce her dead when she is brought to the hospital.

Rice is a symbol of the poisonous ideologies of our society - we are the caged birds being fed these corruptive ideas. Be it patriotism, religion or the need to conform to society. This is a poem inspired by the Romantic poet William Blake, specifically his collection "Songs of Experience".
