To my dear readers, however few they may be: My sincere apologies for the lengthy dry spell. I stopped writing almost without noticing it, about the time that I started dating one of the best people I've ever met. And it's possible I stopped writing because of him - everything that would have spilled out in my ink I could tell him, so there was no need to write. Then again, I also stopped writing around the time I started looking seriously into anarchy and viewing the world around me with a critical and disillusioned eye. And this I think is the real reason I stopped: I was afraid of what would come out. There was so much wrong in the world that I felt so deeply...it was safer to remain on the shallow glass crust rather than break it with a pen and free a geyser. Cowardly, I know. But even in what I thought was a dry spell, I wrote several poems that were too intense for me to go back and reread immediately, which I never got around to typing up and posting until now. Those three are "Glass, Soul, Fire," "Wildfire," and "Bloodink, Soulwords." When I wrote "Glass, Soul, Fire," I suddenly understood two things: why I hadn't been writing, and why many people turn to drugs or drink or cutting. The answer to the first is the second reason I stated above. As I wrote, far deeper than what I'd intended, my hand sped up and my eyes blurred until I could barely see what I was writing for the tears streaming down my cheeks. It scared me to see that I had such a chasm in me, and to see just how precarious my grip on a bland, sane smile was. It was written on a plane, and all situations cited therein are true, and from personal experience. Part of the reason it was so passionate, though, is that I hadn't seen my cheri in almost two weeks. That's a long time to go without someone to hold you, someone, an extremely rare someone, who knew why I cried. I sobbed there on that airplane, and no one saw me. I kept crying, and knew that no one within 200 feet of me would have cried for the same reasons or could understand why I cried then. My father, my beloved father, was sitting across the aisle from me, and he didn't notice I cried, even when he reached across to offer me a snack. I was supremely alone in my inexpressible grief - which is the second answer I understood. When you have no one, you must turn to something for comfort, for external acknowledgment of internal anguish, for the ability to forget; I sympathize now. I don't know how much I'll be writing in days to come. I hope I will be strong enough, with my cheri at my side, to face inherent oppressive malice without flinching, and live to write the tale. I hope my words will still flow, though gone are the days when they wrote of lighthearted fancy. I hope I can keep myself open in a world that demands closure and indifference. And most of all, I hope I live. Geminga J Mistry | |||||||
