In one of the instalments of Counting to Sixty (Foreign to be percise), I mention and use an anxiety disorder called Agoraphobia. "Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, comming from the fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation from which the sufferer cannot escape. People with agoraphobia may experience panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. In severe cases, an agoraphobic may personally confind themselves to their home, their room, or even solely their bed. The medical diagnosis is not strictly a conscious, vicious reaction to fear or embarrassment. Agoraphobic attacks can happen during deep sleep -- ddrenaline is released from a strong reaction (to say a nightmare or even something happening around their sleeping self) in large amounts for several minutes, causing the "fight or flight" reaction. Although the normal "fight or flight" reaction is short in duration, the reaction for agoraphobics comes in waves lasting for hours or even days at a time. During the attacks, the paitent is detached from reality and experiences something atkin to a loss of identity, and is unable to function properly. The patient might take refuge in a corner, on a bed, or pace a hall for hours. This condition requires medical intervention. If the patient is without medication he or she must be taken to a hospital or paramedics must be called to come to the home, otherwise more medical conditions may happen (something called autoimmune flare-ups). Often, during attacks, the patient will refuse to leave the home and will be unable to recognize family members and close friends. Misconceptions-- The word "agoraphobia" is an English adoption of the Greek words agora (αγορά ) and phobos (φόβος ), literally translated as "a fear of the marketplace". This translation is the reason for the common mistake that agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces. This is not exactly the case, since agoraphobics are not afraid of open spaces themselves, but of having panic attacks as a result of being in certain locations. Another misconception is that agoraphobia is a fear of "crowded spaces". Yet again, an agoraphobic does not fear people: he or she rather fears an embarrassing/dangerous situation with no escape. Diagnosis-- Most people who go to mental health specialists find out about agoraphobia after the onset of panic disorder. Agoraphobia is best understood as the behavioral outcome of repeated panic attacks and the repetitive worry, preoccupation, and avoidance. Treatments-- Agoraphobia can be successfully treated in many cases through a very gradual process of "graduated exposure therapy" combined with "cognitive therapy" and sometimes anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications. Alternative ways of treatment include hypnosis and techniques of Neuro-linguistic programming. Treatment options for agoraphobia and panic disorder are similar." | |||||||
