|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
In being a beta-reader, this is as much an opportunity for me to share in the creativity and storytelling that you have to offer, as it is for me to help you improve your skills and pieces of work for in the future. I do have strong morals, so, I will be honest with anyone seeking me as a beta-reader whether or not I think I am fit to read/edit their piece of work. Also, although I may be critical of some writing, I will always present edits in the most tactful and respectful way possible since it was you [the writer] that sought help from an outside reader [me] in the first place; and we all know how scary that can be at times. I will read fiction and poetry to provide insight to writers, however, I would find it hard to edit poetry as it is one of the ultimate expressions of a person's soul, just like music. As Robert Frost put it, "Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." Also, there are certain categories of writing that I feel stronger about in terms of qualification to edit [listed below under preferred], simply because of familiarity and enjoyment of fiction displaying these; However, I am willing to read others and do the research as needed to accurately edit them.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
In terms of stories, I am relatively good at sentence flow, descriptive sentences and/or finding just the right word(s), correcting homophones, spelling, and correcting basic grammar. I am also relatively good at guiding writers on how to improve character development and story development without taking the reins, if you'll forgive the expression, on the actual writing process.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weaknesses include a small piece of everything, that is to say I will be first to tell you that I am far from perfect. In my own writing grammar tends to be my largest source of error, especially with switching between tenses and sometimes punctuation between long sentences. However, I have found that I tend to be a little bit better at catching such errors when I am reading works from other writers. With this said, I will research anything that I am unsure of so that I can give the best feedback possible. Because I do lead a busy life, I may take a long time to complete an edit. This takes into account the fact that I will most likely ask a a lot of questions concerning plot/characters so that I can accurately picture/understand each of them as the author intended for them to be. Finally, I am not very good at romance or fighting/combat scenes, and therefore would not be very qualified to do anything more than a basic edit on them.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I truly enjoy getting lost in a story; and so far, the styles that I have found to do this best [for me] include adventure, fantasy, mystery, family/friendship, as well as those that include elements of humor. However, I am open to beta-reading pretty much anything; and if I truly believe that I am not the right fit for beta-reading a story I will be honest and say so.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I am willing to read pretty much any piece of writing for the enjoyment of creative storytelling and the chance to be swept up into a new world. With that said however, I do not enjoy reading stories specifically related to supernatural or horror themes. If your story only has certain moments where these themes/genres might apply, and you are unsure of whether or not I would be willing to beta-read it, then please do not be afraid to still PM me and ask. Also, I refuse to beta-read stories with excessive amounts of romance or explicit sex scenes/rape, same-sex relationships, incest, blood and gore, excessive profanity, etc.; so, if your story has anything in that ballpark, then you would be better off seeking another beat-reader. As a final note, I tend to become very bored with politics, however, if it is embedded in a deeper story-plot then it will probably be fine.
