Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've got significant experience in editing, particularly in a workshop setting, so I edit based on characterization, atmosphere, detail, dialogue and plot. Focusing on grammatical/spelling errors -- in my view -- is a waste of the author's time, particularly since it is easier to fix those mistakes than it is to fix others central to the character of the work. I'm also not an automaton. Others hide behind quick grammatical fixes. I won't.

I also reserve the right to reject something I feel that beyond my capability to fix because of egregious mistakes. I also reserve this right if a story has weak characters, lack of basic punctuation and no cohesion whatsoever. If that's the case, I will let you know so that you can find someone else to help you.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I scrutinize/analyze characterization and atmospheric detail. Atmospheric detail is also very crucial because without sufficient detail I'm blind in someone else's alternate universe. I'm terrific at spotting inconsistencies. If I think your work has something amazing and that I can do something with it, I'm very good at paying a lot of attention. I love puzzles. I WANT there to be more engaging work available to readers of this site.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
No anime/fantasy type writing, weak ideas, or poor characters, please. I can handle grammatical problems in work, but I can't stand poorly executed/thought out pieces of fiction. I also cannot beta poetry.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm really interested in good characters. I like literary fiction, young-adult fiction, some sci-fi, and even romance, depending on how engaging the story and how strong the voice of the character seems to me. I also like nonfiction, particularly travelogues. I can even take treatises on physics. The more esoteric, the better.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
If it takes place in a high school, sounds like an anime, feels like yaoi (as opposed to other homoerotic fiction), a rant, or song fiction, I don't want to read it. I would prefer not to read poetry, but there are -- albeit incredibly -- a few exceptions. I've decided that unless romance fiction or science fiction stories have exceptional concepts or something very strong going for the work, I won't read it.
