|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
The reason I like to beta-read is the same reason I like to write ridiculously-long reviews - in fact, the same reason I like to write, in general. I like to see others' creativity, and share my own, inasmuchas it will help. Frankly, I just like to help. Whether that means you want an indepth analysis of your punctuation use, or just someone to bounce ideas off occasionally, I'm good for that.
I'm pretty easy-going when it comes to the actual methods of beta-ing. I generally use Microsoft Word and add my comments in bold at the end of each line/paragraph. But I've recently discovered the wonder of Word's Track Changes button, and I'm (almost) as happy to simply use email or PM.
All I ask of you, if you want me to beta-read for you, is to be clear and precise when telling me what you want me to look at. If there's any area you feel needs particular work, don't be afraid of telling me to focus on that; I'll give it my best.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Well, first off, I'm good with spelling, punctuation and grammar: I'm in my last year of college studying English Lit and English Language, so as you can imagine I've had plenty of practice at it.
I also like to think that fixing the way a story reads is something of a strength of mine; I tend to be able to pick up places where words or phrases jar quite easily.
And finally, I've been writing since I learnt how to hold a pen, so I have a good eye for cliche, for obvious mistakes and so on. Oh, and I read fast too ;).
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Well, to start with, I don't speak any other language, so perhaps if English isn't your first language I'm not the best choice. Also, I do tend towards, um, under-wordiness - I believe very strongly in whoever said that most stories could be improved by simply striking out every other word...so if you're trying to lengthen what you're writing, I'm also not ideal. (I once sent a piece of my own work to a beta to help me lengthen it; when I edited it, I found I'd actually lost fifty more words...)
Poetry-wise, I can't for the life of me figure out haikus, so that's not a good idea; nor, to be fair, is most types of heavily-structured poetry.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Anything unusual, interesting, exciting; something that doesn't come along every day. Something that will make me sit on the edge of my chair as I read it. Something I can be proud to have a say in.
If you're writing something like that, I would absolutely love to hear about it. (Whether you want my help or not).
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm generally pretty open to anything so long as it fits the above description. I won't beta anything that's just an outlet for prejudice; I'm happy to beta something which contains prejudice so long as it is obviously the character's and not the author's, and so long as it has a role to play in the story.
Other than that, I'm happy to beta anything you send my way...give it a try!
