Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
The first rule I follow when editing works: look as hard for what a person is doing well as I would for what they're doing wrong. You learn to break the rules of writing by being told what works just as much as what doesn't work.

I will only beta one or two stories at a time, so once I have filled my queue, I will accept no more until I have finished working with an author. I will do my best to get beta-read chapters back to the author within two days (a day to read it and make initial comments, a day to stew), though emergencies may prevent this from happening. I will never spend more than four days before sending my comments on a piece unless something catastrophic happens, at which point I will make the author aware of the reason for delay. I would enjoy an author who feels they can regularly churn out new chapters, but don't be intimidated away if you're not confident in that ability, or if you're more a one-shot or short story type author. I am also willing to help authors work out ideas or plot issues they're having trouble with as a spring-board.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Strong grasp of grammar, spelling, literary criticism. Have taken several literary criticism classes at university level and received grades of B and up. Have been reading critically since childhood, and served as a peer proofreader through school. Excellent attention to detail, and a good eye for subtle plot points. Willing to do some basic research to verify ideas/concepts. Familiar with lots of fantasy tropes and their foils. Have a broad base in mythology and various types of real-world "magical theory" (alchemy, etc.).
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
May not recognize grammar issues that are due to unusual styles. May not catch fragments, as I use them in my own writing purposefully. May come across as harsh. When particularly impressed with a piece, may not offer much criticism, but will attempt to point out positive points. May have difficulty helping with pacing. May be nitpicky about mundane elements in relation to realism.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I enjoy fantasy of most any type, and if I'm going to beta read, I'd like to read something I find fun. I'm into high fantasy, adventure type stuff, though my concept of "adventure" is pretty broad. Spellcasters are usually my favorite characters, but there are plenty of exceptions to the rule. I dig urban fantasy and mystery too. I'll read just about anything, though, so if you're interested, pitch it to me or shoot me a chapter, and we'll see where it goes from there.

I love strong characters as much as I love a strong plot. Compelling characters will drag me into a story as surely as anything. If you think you've got strong characters and one of the above, I'd be more than happy to talk about serving as a beta reader for you.

I'm not into overly sappy romance in large amounts, though I've been known to "aw" at a good scene. I don't prefer the idea of heterosexual pairings over homosexual or bisexual pairings, when romance is involved--it's all the same to me.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I love horror, and I love vampires, werewolves, stuff like that. Most vampire/werewolf/etc. literature, nowadays, seems to be in the Underworld or Blood and Chocolate vein, and I really can't stand that stuff (it makes Carmilla cry wangsty tears of blood). It's just not something I'm into.
