|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a recent high-school graduate with a pretty advanced grasp of the English language, I'm planning on an English degree and- eventually- a teaching career as well. I've taken multiple advanced classes & am used to publishable-quality material. As a Beta-reader, I expect a certain level of talent, cogency, and fairly original or engaging storyline.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm a stickler for proper grammar and punctuation- especially punctuation- and am willing to work with whatever you produce. I tend to have an ear for flow & syntax and I try to make everything run smoothly into a cohesive whole, so be prepared for a little rearranging. On a broader level, I am always more than happy to help with plot hole-smoothing and in fleshing out characters.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I always prefer polysyllabic words to their simpler synonyms, and so I may well insert elevated diction where it is not needed (or wanted). Also, my personal writing style may interpose itself on the changes I suggest; I will try my hardest to keep your work uniquely your own, with any improvements minimally impugning on your style.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm fondest of mature, well-thought-out pieces that feature verisimilitude and rich characterization. My knees go weak for imagery and, especially, symbolism. I don't mind delving into the darker aspects of life. Fantasy, too, has long been a favorite, and I am always a sucker for a GOOD love story. Anything quick & witty, or intellectual & thoughtful, will be more than fine by me.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Trite, overworked characters and plot-lines sometimes only serve to make me angry. I expect your hero to have flaws like a real human, for your points to be plausible, and for the story not to seem pre-cut and machine-wrapped.
