|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm primarily a writer on fictionpress, but I feel I owe it to the community to give back what I take. I won't pull any punches, but I will do my best to explain things as politely as possible. If I tell you something is wrong, I will also tell you why I think it's wrong, and offer suggestions for changes. You have every right to be offended if my opinions of your work are harsh. However, you do not have a right to my services, and I will not change my reviewing style to accommodate your views of your own works; the purpose of seeking an outside perspective is effectively nullified if said outside perspective bends to your views. If you do not like my feedback, you have every right to refuse further criticism, and I will not pester you about it.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My biggest strength would be my grasp of sentence structure: I am very good at recognizing how words blend together beyond just their meanings, as well as how each sentence in a paragraph flows from one to another.
Another of my more major strengths is in grammar and punctuation, though probably just for the simple fact that punctuation is how the rhythm and flow of a sentence or paragraph is controlled.
Descriptions are a strong point of mine as well, in what limited sense it can be applied to another author's work. I cannot see a character or object as you see it; you're the author, not me, but I can help you understand how the descriptions you have will appear to most readers. If that doesn't fit the image in your head, I can do my best to help you revise your description as long as I have sufficient knowledge of what it is you're trying to describe.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
By far, my biggest weakness is spelling. I'll usually notice if you replace words (i.e. your and you're), but beyond that you're on your own, unless you have another, more spelling-oriented beta reader. A standard spellcheck will usually make up for this, but I can't guarantee I'll catch when you have words that are "misspelled without being misspelled" (council counsel, etc).
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I can beta for any type of story, though I would say my strong points lean towards general, fantasy, and sci-fi fictions.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Stories that are obviously overused/cliché will be better off with another beta reader. I won't refuse them, but I will make it very clear that your work is unoriginal, and explain why. Examples would include, but not be limited to:
-Anime style stories that focus more on the spectacular feats of their characters than their emotions and personalities
-The over-used parts of the vampire genre, such as the cliché "vampire in love with a human" plot: Often times, these coincide with the previous example, since for some odd reason vampires now have superpowers.
Other types of stories that I would prefer not to beta for are listed below. Again, I will not refuse to beta on the grounds below, but be forewarned that I will offer my honest criticism for them.
-Pure romance stories: This is not a disliked genre; I just have to admit that I wouldn't be the right person to critique a romance. Stories with romantic sub-plots and elements are fine.
-Stories that abuse profanity: Profanity, as an element of writing, can be used to a very high artistic degree to emphasize a characters thoughts and emotions. Over-use of profanity dulls its effectiveness, and I view it as a poor practice and a lazy writing style.
