|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
When I beta-read I'm going to be looking for obvious spelling and grammatical errors, as well as ways to improve the overall readability of the story. I will be looking out for dialogue, plot, storyline, and whether or not your characters have consistent personalities.. I'm out to help you, so if I suggest a lot of things and give you much constructive criticism, it's not to offend. I use track changes when I edit, but I don't like to put notes using it because they end up all over the place, so I usually just use different colors or italics so you can differentiate when I'm speaking to you directly and when I'm adding something.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a good eye for dialogue and dialogue tags, as well as character development. I can tell when your MC is acting out of character, and if you're having trouble with what direction your story should be going in, I can lend a hand. I'm also decent when it comes to grammatical errors, and I can rearrange sentences to make them smoother to read. If the length of the chapter is manageable (see Not My Cup of Tea), then I should get back to you within a couple of days.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm very harsh, very honest. If you can't take criticism, please, please don't use me. I mean, I'm nice, and if there are things I like I'll tell you, and if your writing is crap I'll do my best to help you, but don't expect anything sugar-coated. At all.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will pretty much beta read anything you like, so much as it has potential to be a decent story and you actually take into consideration what I tell you.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't do poetry. Also, if you haven't gone over the story yourself and insist "it's only a first draft" to avoid criticism, I'm not going to help you. Send me something either that you're proud of, or that you've gone over and over and that you want help on. No churning out 2,000 words and sending it to me without rereading it.
Also: I only accept one chapter at a time. I've had people dump 75,000 word stories on me and ask me to edit them. I was willing, but let tell me you: there was no chance I would have gotten anything done. And I didn't. So if your story is 75,000 words long, one chapter at a time. Limited to 3,000 words. Any longer and I won't get to it. Then of course, once I'm done with that, then the next chapter, and then the next.
