Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have evolved both as a beta-reader and writer. I will still use whatever resource I can to improve your writing, but instead of highlighting corrections, I will change the font color. I find it less distracting in my own editing. There will be a key above the document to let you know what the colors /

br /

I request that anyone that wants me to beta-read for them use the DocX program provided through FictionPress. This is just to allow privacy for both parties and to go through the proper channels. As a bonus, it keeps the documents in a format that I can only /

br /

The expectations I have for any author working with me are:br /

br /

1. Open to suggestions about style changes and word /

br /

2. An active role in the editingbr /

br /

3. It must be through the DocX system in Fiction Pressbr /

br /

My reasons for these conditions are, in order:br /

br /

1. I notice in my time reading stories that are online that the message young or aspiring authors are trying to convey is often muddled by stylistic and/or unnecessary verbiage. Spelling and grammar are part of this as /

br /

2. I am not a teacher that is grading an essay you've handed to me. This story is your own; you MUST take an active role in the editing process, or I am nothing more than a glorified spell-checker. When I say an active role, I mean I want input, comments, and even critic on my suggestions. If you want the story to remain your original work, you need to be active. I am no mind reader on what you want in /

br /

3. Although not as important as the first two, I want to go through the DocX system for posterity and so that we are not jumbling up word processors. I recognize that not every computer uses Microsoft, which is why I would like to try to use DocX to keep that problem out of the equation.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
The areas I excel in are:br /

br /

*Stylistic changesbr /

br /

*Word flowbr /

br /

*Grammarbr /

br /

I like to knit-pick stories over and over again. Don't be surprised if I will have read over your story about 3-6 times before I hand in the corrections.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
The areas I am weak in are:br /

br /

*Time management of editingbr /

br /

*Spellingbr /

br /

*Verb tensebr /

br /

The time management issues stem from my bad habit of constantly re-checking my editing over and over again. My spelling issues are because I was lazy in school as far as spelling is concerned. The only reason I spell as well as I do now is because I read like /

br /

Verb tense is an area I wasn't even aware I had an issue with till another author on Fiction Press told me. How's that for constructive criticism! (In all seriousness, I am really grateful to them; I prefer critic than praise. Hence why I like beta-reading).

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer to beta-read the following:br /

br /

*Romancebr /

br /

*Fantasybr /

br /

*Young Adultbr /

br /

*Sci-Fibr /

br /

*Kidsbr /

br /

In any of these areas, I would like the story to either teach a lesson about life or be entertaining in general.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
The following are stories I would prefer not to beta-read:br /

br /

*Stories with prominent same-sex couple/sbr /

br /

*Horror genrebr /

br /

*Explicit sex scenesbr /

br /

My reasons for my aversion to these stories is as follows:br /

br /

*I do not believe in homosexual relationships. You want to write about it, that's your choice and I would not stop you. I just prefer not to beta-read it; I don't want my views changing the way you envision your /

br /

*I am not a fan of horror stories. Again, I feel like I would ruin what you envision for it if I beta-read /

br /

*I have young kids in the house and I would rather not have to explain any 'naughty words' to them because they read over my shoulder.
