|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm pretty young, but in an effort not to deter people from asking me to beta, I'm not going to state my age. I've been writing for about four years now and have attended several workshops that hopefully have made me better at it. If I find a story I love, I will read it and gush about it and read it some more, but if I find a story I hate, I won't ever look at it again. I'm not afraid to be whatever kind of beta you need, just be sure to let me know before-hand whether you're looking for encouragement and support in continuing a story or criticism and more detail-oriented work.
I prefer to work with people in a way that allows me to contact them directly with any questions or concerns about the story, so if you're comfortable talking over email or anything like that, let me know. Otherwise, I'll talk with you via PM on the site. I don't like to just make my changes to a story and send it back, that doesn't teach the writer anything and it doesn't benefit me as an editor. I will mark-up and write all over a story if you send it to me, so if you want to keep it free of that sort of thing, let me know before-hand.
I'm excited to help anyone who wants to try to make their story even a little bit better.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm superb with grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. I've got ways to take your vocabulary to the next level or bring it down a couple of notches, depending on what you want. I work really well with character dialogue and different ways of speaking.
I'm also good at fixing plot holes and coming up with suggestions for continuing the plot if you hit a snag. I'd be glad to help out with research if it's a realistic-type story. I'm also good at fixing the little things, like details and continuity within the story. I work well with plot development and keeping things moving. No one likes a story that drags out forever and ever, and I especially can't stand it when an author is stuck on one thing forever.
I'm very honest about my opinions on a work and I'll point out every little detail that doesn't quite fit or looks wrong if that's the kind of thing you want.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm terrible at summaries. I see the merit in them, I think that a well-written one can draw a reader in and keep them in, I just cannot write them. I find it impossible to not describe every little thing that's going to happen in the plot in a summary.
Also, I am a firm believer in writing what you mean when you mean it. In other words, I detest symbolism. I think that in order to keep the reader interested, you need to tell them what you mean, not hint around it and ever-so-subtly nudge them in the right direction. For this reason, I am crap at understanding poetry unless the symbolism is glaringly obvious.
Finally, I have trouble working without a deadline. I am at once both very lazy and very busy. I'm a full-time student, so I don't have much time to do anything after school, but if you tell me when you need something edited by, I will do my best to get it done in that time frame, and if I can't for some reason, I will be timely in letting you know how late it will be. I will not be able to read everything as soon as I receive it and I am going to need motivation to get things edited on time. I have problems with distractions and if I forget about a story, please remind me that you need it by a specific date. Additionally, I have a tendency to need direction in my work. I need people to tell me where they think the story is going, what they have in mind for the next few chapters. Otherwise, I may go somewhere completely off-the-wall and not where you'd like the story to go. Please tell me what you want when you want it.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Personally, I think action/adventure/romance stories are the best. Chances are, if you hand me one of those, I will beta it, no matter what it's about. I appreciate a good horror story, one that's tasteful and well-written, not all blood and gore and killing people every two seconds. I understand that blood and gore are necessary in a horror story, and I like a moderate amount, just don't go out of your way to paint my computer screen red. I am particularly fond of young adult literature and literary fiction and will read pretty much anything in those genres. I appreciate all sorts of endings, whether they're happy or sad or weird. I also read supernatural, but they must be interesting and unique. In other words, not your everyday, Cullen/Anne Rice/highly popular author vampires. I'm especially interested in faries (faeries, fay, whatever you call them).
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Smut/Slash/Sex stories are not okay with me. Stories sent to me must have a well-developed plot (or the author must have an idea of the plot they would like in the story but don't know how to write it). Plot-less works are not acceptable. I also don't like poetry very much, unless it's humorous. I don't particularly like historical fiction, but I will read some on a case-by-case basis. Historical fiction is a lower priority with me. Pure romance is a no-no, as are most family, hurt/comfort, and scripts. I don't like science fiction very much, but I'll read it on a case-by-case basis. I don't like spiritual and western works either. Also, no non-fiction.
