Fluofontis chapter 8 . 3/2/2004
Wow. You are insane, but I fear that my tendancies would be worse than your were I to admit my obsession. I started reading fics before the forth book, and haven't stopped since. Dear lord, I need help. And, I agree w/ you about Sirius
Sweet Calamity chapter 3 . 2/24/2004
LMAO! I loved your mocking. The guy/girl/prat that wrote that email really needs to think about some things. For instance, young children really should not be exposed to the Bible. It has sexuality and violence and blood and stuff like that - it's the ultimate horror story, and I know from experience. *cringe*
Why is BLOOD in all caps? Is BLOOD the most important thing about god? Wow, that's one-sided.
I know exactly how you feel. XD "I don't suffer from Potterholism... I enjoy every minute of it!"
Must read more.

Formerly chapter 8 . 2/1/2004
I read your essay, or rant on religion, and was favorably impressed. Then I read this.
It makes me sad. You obviously aren't a bad writer, and you have pretty good ideas. You're good with words, as well. But...
Harry Potter? I've read the books myself. More than once, I'll admit. They're easy to read, and even fun. To a point. If you blank out your mind.
They're trashy. I'm ashamed of myself for reading them, but then I've read the entire Hardy Boys series more than once (this may have ruined my mind) and feel that when you don't have many books, you can read anything.
Harry Potter is filled with absurd cliches, a hideous view of the world (good and evil, for one - it separates the world into "good guys" and "bad guys", which is not by any means a good thing), and several other miscellaneous problems. It's not the worst thing out there, to be sure. But it's quite probably the most popular.
I'm a big fantasy buff. Sort of. Dave Duncan, David Eddings, Terry Pratchett... hell, as bad as he is, even Robert Jordan - and his imitator, Terry Goodkind. And many, many more. Some of these are quite bad. Others are quite good. They're all infinitely better than Rowling, though.
J. K. Rowling is not a good author. That's not a problem. The problem is that she's making literature worse. People will imitate her. She has a cult following. She will set the stage for more fantasy books of her type - books for children! They are, you know. Anything can be read by anyone, but Harry Potter is still oriented towards children, with a correspondingly narrow worldview.

Well, I've ranted too long already. I'll conclude with: Have you read any other fantasy? Tried, maybe, the Discworld series? It's more engrossing, in my opinion, than Harry Potter. The Belgariad is pretty much the same. There are better ones, but then they are occasionally harder to get into. You are correct in your comparison, Harry Potter IS a drug. It's easy to understand, and easy to read... but it's not good. Once you're hooked on it, though, more complex things (which are usually far better) seem overly complicated.
I am truly the opposite of a Harry Potter fan, as you may be able to tell from this prolonged and demented rant. In any case,

Goddess of Shiny Objects chapter 6 . 1/30/2004
Yay!
... You know, I really wouldn't mind punching that jerk out. *daydreams*
Not entirely relevant: Lily Evans would punch him out. Therefore, she is my hero.

katmonkey chapter 1 . 1/29/2004
LOL. This is so funny. I, like you, am a Harry Potter addict.
The tragic thing for me is that I didn't discover Harry's world until the Prisoner of Azkaban came out. I was at an airport bookshop, when I was going to Florida with my family and I saw it and thought, "Hmm. that looks interesting." I read the back of the book and then I made my Mum it for me aswell as CoS and the Sorcerer's Stone! I read all three of them multiple times in 2 weeks!
Anyway I'm off to read the rest of this!
