Reviews for Wand Composition Theory
chrissytingting chapter 1 . 8/30/2011
Nice job! :D

For the wood of the wand, J.K. Rowling used the Celtic calendar and their birthdays to determine what the wood would be. However, it is possible that she wrote their birthdays according to the properties of the wood and their character.

As for the length of the wand, it is true that their height seems to effect the length of the wand. However, Draco Malfoy, who was rather tall, had a relatively short wand. There may just be a couple of exceptions.

As for the flexibility of the wand, I do agree with you. One comment that I want to make is that Bellatrix Lestrange had the 'unyielding' wand, so perhaps it may have a slight reflection on who they are.
Tricorvus chapter 1 . 7/29/2011
Fleur de la Couer means flower of the court, but you'd be amazed how many people think it means flower of the heart - because of Richard Couer de Lion - the Lion hearted. Just wanted to point that out. You'd also be amazed at how many fanfiction writers came up with wand cores that JK never dreamt of. Basilisk venom, Acromantula venom... I can't help but wonder if those wouldn't eat their way through the wood? ...

Hey, Pineapple Queen here. I love this analysis-it's very believable, especially the part on the different woods used. Great job, you really did your homework here, Zahri!

Majick chapter 1 . 3/28/2004
I hadn't thought about this in such detail before, and I like the idea of Harry and James' wands being similar. I've often wondered how important the wands the characters use are to them, and I guess we'll learn more. I'd like to see more about the wands themselves, whether there's any character to them beyond the materials from which they're constructed. Does the process of wand construction make a difference to the wand itself? It's implied by Ollivander in GoF...
As always, a thoughtful and intriguing piece of work, enough so to drive me to register here at fp to leave a proper review.
technetium chapter 1 . 7/14/2003
Wow. I'm impressed with your research, organization, and logical writing. Excellent job! Unfortunately, now I'm sort of worried about what will happen to Ron.
Architeuthis chapter 1 . 7/14/2003
Nice piece.

I'd say, rather, that the wand length could have to do with a character's ADULT height. Harry may indeed grow to be about the same height as his father, but I don't know if he's that tall yet.

On the other hand, Ron has always been described as being taller than Harry. Voldemort and Cedric aren't exactly short, either.

I liked your descriptions of the beliefs surrounding the various wood types. I'd heard about oak and yew, but the others were new to me.
l'esprit d'amour chapter 1 . 7/14/2003
Wow! I read the Harry Potter books, but I never thought this far about the wands. they were just something there that I accepted. The section on wand length sounds quite true, and I can only laugh when I think of what Fleur's wand would look like in Hagrid's hand. ;P

I like the section on properties of wand wood. sounds really right and appropriate. Maybe Rowling did her research on this too :P

But the other sections on wand core and wand flexibility is really sorry to say, not very believable :S but good job overall :)
Alyx Bradford chapter 1 . 7/13/2003
Nicely done - I'd been waiting for someone to do an essay like this. I especially liked the inclusion of explanations of the properties of different types of wood. (There were entirely too many prepositional phrases in that sentence...) Good job.
aegis chapter 1 . 7/13/2003
actually, I'd think that the wand flexibility does have something to do with personality. Cedric, who was popular and well-liked, has a wand that is "pleasantly springy". And Fleur's is inflexible? It sounded to me like it had something to do with how stubborn the character could be.

Hm...and height. Is Krum taller than Harry? I thought he was, but his wand's shorter than Harry's is.

The kind of wood was great with how it listed properties of each wood. But what is it with the cores? Are you suggesting Ron might die soon? Oh no...
