Melissa Thinks: The term “free love” was coined in the Victorian era by feminists who sought to keep personal affairs personal by separating the state and church from things such as marriage, sex, birth control, etc. In the 1960’s and 70’s, in the time the Vietnam War, Woodstock and the hippie movement, “free love” became more associated with promiscuity—things like one night stands, multiple sexual partners, and adultery. It is in this time period that our story takes place.

“Free Love” by Random Acts of Authorship is a stunning tale of confliction, desire, and heartbreak. This 2007 SKOW nominee continuously amazed me. I was completely engrossed in Amy’s situation and was rooting for her and Luke until the very end. Much like the namesake term’s meaning, “Free Love” is about the character’s desire to love who they want without the inevitable backlash from friends, family, and the public in general. That’s why this story is so great—even though it takes place in the 70’s, there are still many things applicable to our lives today.

I love it so far. Two things though: you misspelled "peaked"; it should be "piqued" and "sceptical" which should be "skeptical".

I've just read your story nonstop! It's amazing, I'm so happy Amy and Luke got together in the end. Congratulations! It's definitely one of my favourite stories!

Good story

This was truly a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing it with us. First of all I was incredibly surprised when I realized that this story was actually taking place at the beginning of the 1970's. I remember my history lessons from my undergraduate studies as well as the 10 page essay I wrote on the Vietnam War. Although politics and religion are never topics that should be brought up when reviewing stories I completely agree with the way Amy saw the war. The thought of having someone I love in war terrifies the bejesus out of me. The emotional struggle that Amy, Sally and Luke had to go through was treacherous and quite frankly depressing. Although Adam and David came towards the end of the story the idea that they too would suffer the consequences of bad decisions and circumstances was heart breaking. I am glad that after three years Luke and Amy were finally able to be together and that Sally was able to reach happiness with her family. Again thank you for sharing your story, it was excellently written and let me tell you, you have an incredible amount of talent. Best wishes. Lizray

I've never really considered the Vietnam war before, Probably a combination of me being Scottish and it having happened a long time ago; but it must have wrecked so many families and ruined so many people...

For the first couple chapters I didn't even realise it was set in the past, until she mentioned going to Woodstock.

The characterisation was particularly good I thought; the way Sally was made out to be someone to be hated at the beginning but then when you get her side of the story, it makes more sense, and turns her into a character to empathise with.

Don't really know what else to comment on, but I just thought this was lovely. :)

This is a beautiful story. It was realistic and well-written, and I enjoyed it very much. There were a few grammar errors ("curb," not "kerb," etc) but overall it flowed well and was believable.

I realize this story was written some time ago, but I just thought I'd let you know that people are still discovering it and appreciating it.
