Nice premise. It would be interesting if you continued with this line of thought. No, not about the escapees landing and subsequent life on Earth, but of the world they left behind.
Perhaps a series of short stories of the doomed world trying to save themselves? Scientists and engineers attempting to build more escape shuttles (perhaps the design somehow got 'lost' and they have to try again?) Perhaps the government trying to cover up the impending catastrophe? It would be even better if it all ends tragically. (In that case, the last bit can be about ordinary people literally standing at the end of the world?)
