| Erisah Mae chapter 1 . 6/3/2007
ooh I love this character... such potential- so many, many places that you could go with him... and the same with this setting, what with the mad prince, the ignorant king and two very ambitious people...
Very, very interesting... Nice work!
| KayB chapter 1 . 4/12/2007
Well, I haven't read "Double Edged Swords" but I read this and I enjoyed it. Who knows; perhaps I'll read "Double Edged Swords" now that I decided I liked this oneshot.
| Fantazolic chapter 1 . 3/14/2007
Excellent piece! You've described everything intricately- it's like visualization in words.
Great ending, too.

This is interesting. I'd like to see what else happens to the young Flin. I'm also impressed with your writing style. You depend mainly on dialogue and leave a lot of things left to the imagination, which makes the story quite flexible, to say the least. I like it. Good job.
| Kjersti chapter 1 . 4/19/2006
Loved this one-shot. It was brill. And I absolutely *adored* "Double-Edged Swords". Great story. You write really well. :)
| An Inside Joke chapter 1 . 4/18/2006
I have to say, I was expecting Flin to be a noble who got into the spying buisiness. I feel like from his bearing and everything, he has a noble feel, so I'm not sure how to take the whole theif-who-made-a-name-for-himself thing. If he was really that poor, he probably wouldn't have a real last name, but if he made one up, it would probably be hard to work that in to a one-shot story. Some of the beginning had some modern phrases and things, but you settled into the period-style language once you got into the story.
| Neaera chapter 1 . 1/21/2006
Aw man wicked sweetness! So that's how he got into the business... Awesome. Keep it up huns!
| Siffy chapter 1 . 1/11/2006
I'm confused. :/ In Double Edged Swords, Selera says
“I’m a married woman, Liss. Against my will, certainly – you and the rest of the country have no idea that my father forced me to marry Mealc, do you?” Bitterness seeped into her voice; her eyes bored into mine. “I never wanted to get married, let alone to….” She made a convulsive gesture with her hands and moved her glance to her lap, where her fingers were tightly knotted. “He can’t help it, poor fellow, he’s just as helpless as I am.” Another silence seemed to settle uncomfortably upon the little receiving chamber, with its straight-backed red chairs and glass windows. I examined the hole in my graying leggings without seeing it. The queen of Narayar took a deep breath.
Yet in this story it seems like Nicar and Selera have been plotting their way to the throne for years and that Selera was only too willing to marry Mealc so she could be princess and foward their plan. After all, Nicar's father went through the trouble of convincing King Reonar that Selera should marry Mealc. I got this impression particularly with these lines:
“We’re on our way to the palace,” Nicar cut in smoothly, his voice floating up the chimney clearly. “King Reonar has invited us. My father has him under his thumb; Reonar is completely amenable to the idea of Selera marrying his son.”
“You realize Mealc is a halfwit? Not to mention, Selera, you’re only fifteen –”
“I’m sixteen in a few months, and I’m not planning to marry him right away. And since he’s a halfwit, he won’t have any expectations of me – and once I’m a princess, my father has no claim on me. So don’t try to patronize me.”
Anyway, that's all. Keep writing!
| Loriency chapter 1 . 1/7/2006
that's it? there's no more? it was just a one-shot? Aw...still, it's an interesting way to show how Flin got his job with Nicar. Honestly I would have never suspected that Selera would only be a year or two older than Flin, and considering that in Double Edged Swords Flin's...what, about 20? maybe 21? I think 20, and if Nicar's six year's older than him in this, then that means that in DES, he's about 26, and Selera's about 22 or 23, which is a lot younger than what I had originally thought. I thought she would be in her late 20s, early 30s, but I guess not. That's cool, though. Hehe, I liked this very much. I hope you'll write more about it...cya later? And update soon with DES!
| temblance chapter 1 . 1/7/2006
yay! Flin as a younger kid! that was a nice short story to supplement Double Edged Swords. I don't exactly know what it would be like if I wasn't already familiar with the characters but it was cool all the same. Flin had a not-so-easy childhood, then, living on the streets? But I liked learning about how NIcar and him met. It was good finding out a little bit more about Selera too- she seemed as obstinate as Liss (and about the same age). nice story!
| Muse of Malice chapter 1 . 1/7/2006
Ahahaha, I loved it too! Always loved a good humorous fantasy.
Flin's a great protagonist; I can't help cheering for him. And your excellent descriptions are amusing and refreshing to read. Keep it up!
Eagerly awaiting your next chapters, hehehe.
| Punch chapter 1 . 1/7/2006
yo, nice background story. teehee. i know you loved writing it
| Pheobe Meryll chapter 1 . 1/7/2006
Love it, love it, love it! Awesome!
I loved seeing into Flin's history...it was really fun and telling. Also I liked that we got some insight into Nicar and Selera's relationship. Lovely story, all around. I don't know if it would be as good if the reader hasn't looked at double-edged swords...usually stand-alone short stories are more descriptive, to make a certain point. But as a way to give us his history in an entertaining way, this was great.
I think I got in the first review, too *does happy dance* thanks for a nice way to end the day!
