This "The Lamia screamed, fire their weakness" seems to need some words, and immediatly after there's another "it's" that shouldn't be. You've got a whole flock of those, actually. Exorcize them.

Being a martial artist, I'd like further description of this "getting into a fighting stance." because it would reveal a lot about the tecnique the kid has been taught to use.

You bring the 'real world' influence back with the exams, good. The fight was ok, but a bit to reminiscent of a combo of Harry Potter (Accio Broom!) and Harry Dresden (sw33t fire magic). Not bad though. I'll stay with this fic.

Good. Your prose and grammar are generally good, as is the world-building I see so far; the modern-seeming parts blending with the cobblestone beauty of 'fantasy'. Indeed? This intro is not enough. Give me some story; your premise is interesting. I'd also like an explanation of how magic and science are opposites. How does one "win" or lose? Perhaps give examples from both or insert some connections to today's religion/science problems-but of course that is me and now you. You just need tp write something now. Interesting concept, sure.
