What about things that you would just like to say in response? For example, you were saying about the follow-the-links thing: I do that, where I find a story or essay or whatever that I like and I go to the author's page and maybe read some of their other stuff and review it if it appeals to me, and then sometimes if I've read everything I want to read, I go and have a look at their favourites and read those stories (they've been put on the favourite's list for a reason).

Would the author recieving that (aka, in this case, you) appreciate that?

And, also, I don't get the last bit: is this cliche ending the end of the review or the chapter? What actually is everyone else writing? (Bad reviews?)

Also, what actually are flames? I've asked that a few people now, and I keep getting different answers. Is it where someone reviews and basically says, 'this is crap, I really don't like it, it is a load of * and I hate it and there was absolutely no point in writing so much rubbish whatsoever' and that kinda thing? (I got an annoymous review like that once. It really hit home, so I deleted it, and looked to my good reviews for comfort, and thought about editing or rewriting, and then I disabled annonymous reviews.) Or is it something else? (Someone once said to me that it was where you put all this constructive critisism, trying to be nice and helpful, and then the author replies back stuff like 'are you saying my work's rubbish? I hate you, you're so mean for saying that!' and stuff. I've also been told that it's where someone's too picky with your work, picking up on every single tiny little silly typo and every single tiny grammatical mistake. So what exactly is a flame?)

And now I feel like that's not a very good ending to my review. Ah wells. XD

I'll fess up, I was totally looking for a different story when the title caught my eye. I'm completely jealous. Titles will never be my strong suit, but I greatly enjoyed reading this. I always mean to review more often on FP and a few other posting sites I'm on and then I never do because I feel like an idiot because I'm a 'meh' reviewer, and I was never sure what to do about it. I read the whole thing, and gave every last word you said some really deep thought.

I have been writting fanfics for about almost two years now, and had recently ventured onto the forray of writting original works. It hasn't been easy, let me tell ya. Mostly because it's quite disheartening to see that only 3 people have bothered to actually read what one has spent hours upon hours writting. Writting is hard, really hard.

But I love writting. I started back in January of 09, and havent looked back since. I write because I love it. But it must be said: No matter how much one writes, to see that so few have even read your work, that is quite disheartening. And that's not even getting into the lack of reviews. It is quite sad, really.

Just like in fanfics, writting real stuff requires thought and effort. I found this out the very first time I ever wrote anything, way back when I was 12. It's a lot of work, and just like any 'real' work, writting demands effort.

But I still love writting, and I plan on continuing to write. I just wish I had more of an audience, you know? I just want my work to be read by people. A review a day makes my day ok. Haha, that rhimed.

But I also know that I gotta give to recieve. I always try to leave a review. Always. I can't always review a work, but I do make it a point to try. Why? Because I know how it is, to spend hours working on something, only to have it ignored.

Pardon my long review. Just felt like saying something.

I really like your "How To" essays. Your style of writing keeps me entertained as I learn how to improve my own writing and I appreciate that. I've read most of your essays and I like all that I've read, but I'm really bad about reviewing.

I think this piece would be better with more examples (excluding Chapter 2) because I got lost more than once. Maybe proofread it again?

Under "1. Why to Review" is 'firstly' a word? I certainly don't think so.

I don't have a FictionPress account (quite obviously), but I thrive in the FanFiction community, and seriously - 'meh' reviewers irk me. Not that I don't appreciate them, of course, because I make it a point to thank every reviewer, it's just that I'd really like more CCs, or at the very least, critiques.

I took your point of opening the review box while reading. Rashied may be a bastard, but I have to disagree that Darth Vader is evil. Sure, he blew up a planet, but he's not evil. He's just a bit misguided.

Fun essay. You give some interesting tips, many of which I abide by myself. I've been told to find at least two good and bad comments/suggestions in every piece. If you haven't found those, then you didn't look hard enough.

Of course, this is a review, but I don't really want to review an essay about reviewing, so I'm not, really. That's a fair amount of "really"s.
