It sounds like he/she is about to commit suicide...which according to Christian beliefs is actually a sin. So maybe they won't find 'the light of God' after all. Still, it's a great poem - you were more careful with the rhyme than me - and I like the light/darkness contrast. The chess metaphor is also good.
