| PoetOfSaiMiHunManKal chapter 1 . 12/29/2015
Grim...very grim. The plot here was both tragic and shockingly realistic. This story serves as an excellent deconstruction of how the colonization of unknown frontiers (I'm assuming it's the American West in this story) is often portrayed as a glorious and romanticized journey of people hoping to become rich landowners when in fact that wasn't the only reason and that (as shown in this story) many of the new settlers were ostracized and destitute in their original settlements and sought to leave their homes out of desperation (and that this meant that preparation for their journey would be difficult). I like how the details and subtle emotion within this story effectively convey a sense of despair and tragedy without even giving us the characters' names. The ending where the protagonist just feels forsaken and either faints or dies from despair (and the ambiguity of that scene) was especially great.
