Nice work, I enjoyed your story
One thing though, Maryland was not technically Confederate territory, it was a border state that was still loyal to the Union during the war. She could've been extradited based on the provisions of the fugitive slave act or private mercenaries, but Maryland had no legal obligation to extradite a runaway slave, epecially during the Civil War.
Giving a slave back to the South was considered treasonous, because you would be giving back their workforce, so usually slaves that escaped were never forced back.
Other than that historically inacurrate moment, very nice story

Wow, this is an interesting first chapter! I can't wait to see what comes next. I used to live around that area, so it's interesting to see how you describe it so long ago!
