Reviews for A Driver and a Drunk |

![]() ![]() ![]() To be honest, I didn't like this as well. There are a couple reasons; one is that I am apparently a genre snob, and I don't do light-hearted. The other is that it just feels a little formulaic. As in, straight-edge girl bad boy seen it before. Though, of course, there's more to it than that. Some of it just feels really smart and witty. The inclusion of Jeff and how the story focuses on him for a bit, making us think that it's about him and Clementine, makes us wonder if Clementine is really as straight-edge or one track as we think. Plus, we never know if she is a "lip virgin" because her thoughts don't contradict her speech. One reading of this almost has me convinced she's very crafty and just leading him on. I don't think that's exactly what you're going for, but I do think you meant to make her a little more mysterious than the simple dialogue would suggest. Drunkness as a state of mind also works as a nice set up for the unexplainable nature of attraction. I can't decide whether they have a reason or not. There are also great lines, like palms painting cheeks. It's an interesting way to think about it instead of hands covering the red. Covering cheeks is a tell-tale sign of embarrassment, so I have no idea why people think it helps. Eh. The tampon wand idea is entertaining and not at all forced. Though I think not explaining what Nate's holding right away is a little false mysterious and unnecessary. So this wasn't my favorite, mostly for preference reasons, but it had some nice moments, and it kept me engaged all the way through! Yay. |
