My intepretation: is immortality like a desire to personificate the nature world, see what we want to see or is it more like a lingering tingling feeling of something consumed. Am I close to the original thought?
If not, still great poem, fun to interpret.

this really makes me think of michael ondaatje's "the cinammon peeler" (that's a high compliment, he's a profilic Canadian poet) the way you used the scent was poignant. leaves the the taste in the reader's mouth.
